Falluja and Guernica

category international | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Sunday November 07, 2004 12:10author by Hilaal Report this post to the editors

It is impossible not to be struck by the similarity between the Nazi bombing of Guernica sixty years ago and the present day attack by the Anglo- Americans on the civilian town of Falluja
Picasso's Guernica
Picasso's Guernica

History has left us with the impression that Francos fascist government in Spain was in fact legitimate when indeed is was not. Franco led his right-wing group with the help of Hitler, Mussolini and Irish Blueshirts among others against a democratically elected government. They committed mass murder on civilian populations with the blessing of the Catholic Church and their most memorable such murderous attack was the bombing of Guernica.

A tapestry copy of Pablo Picassos famous cubist painting of the scene is displayed on the wall of the United Nations building in New York at the entrance to the Security Council room, as a constant reminder of the horrors of war. However, on January 27, 2003 a large blue curtain was placed over the tapestry to hide it as Colin Powell and John Negropointe gave a press conference to argue for the illegal war and invasion of Iraq: as they trotted out lie after lie about weapons of mass destruction .

Just as the Nazis combined to crush the democratically elected government of Spain sixty years ago and replace it with the illegitimate Franco "reich" so today's fascists combine to install Iyad Allawis equally illegitimate government in Iraq. It is easy to liken the Americans to the German nazis and the British to Mussolini's fascists. These are the true terrorists and as the Lancet showed last week, between them, they have caused the murder of approximately 100,000 Iraqi men, women and children since they illegally invaded and occupied Iraq.

Just as foreign fighters flocked to Spain in the 1930's to assist the democratically elected government against the fascist onslaught, so today, gallant foreign fighters flock to Iraq and Falluja to aid Iraqi Resistance in it's struggle against an imperialistic force attempting to install an illegitimate government of former Baathist thugs . This imperialist strategy was tried and failed miserable throughout the 19th century but this does not deter the stupid Americans and British.

Resistance commanders in Falluja claim many surprises await the Imperialist Crusaders when they try to take Falluja. More than 118 cars laden with high explosives have been distributed throughout the city . Scores of locals and over 300 foreign fighters have volunteered for suicide bombings in the ferocious counter attack on the Americans. Some will be in cars, others will be waiting in booby-trapped houses. Roads are mined with "improvised explosive devices" as have railway tracks, bridges and narrow alleys. Snipers recruited from across Iraq are already in position this weekend. Surface-to-air missiles with which to counter attack helicopter gunships are distributed and manned by professional soldiers and units of hardened fighters. A number of missiles have been tipped with deadly chemicals including cyanide which will be fired at the Americans from their rear. Rear positions, mainly outside Falluja, will provide assistance to the fighters inside once the battle starts. Morale is high among those waiting to fight and Americans .

Al-Zarqawi is not resident in Falluja according to local commanders. In fact the Tawheed's main commander in Falluja is Omar Hadid, a former electrical engineer. Hadid is a mild mannered man who fled Saddam Hussein's Iraq for Jordan and has only recently returned with a group of mainly Jordanian and Syrian fighters to evict Americans from his home town.
