kicking racism out of ireland- SARI football tournament
we are all part of the global village
the weather was not as good as previous years but that has not stopped SARI growing bigger every year.
FATIMA were the overall winners of the cup and DUN LAOIGHRE won the plate
lots of people, lots of color, lots of fun
well done to everyone who was involved
and fair play to the bohs girls, yesterday wasnt the warmest of days but the still went around smiling in their bohs tops
we stopped and had little interviews with people yesterday. so enjoy the audio clips and tell more people that this and other thing like it are growing nationwide
its a strange time for ireland, untill recently we were the ones leaving home, hoping to be made welcome in new countries. now the tables have turned and people are arriving on our shores
people from all backrounds and coutries are learnign to live, work and play together
diversity is healthy
we celebrate this and hope it grows and grows
as Peter said: we are all part of the global village

Sports Against Racism Ireland, (SARI) is a non-profit making organisation with Charitable Status that was set up in July 1997 as a direct response to the growth of racist attacks from a small but vocal section of people in Ireland.
SARI uses sport to integrate people from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

SARI attempt to create a positive attitude towards all minority groups by way of our multi-cultural events to ensure that young people of this country grow up with a tolerant attitude towards people with different backgrounds.
The main aims of SARI are:
i) To create an awareness of the problems of racism and xenophobia in Ireland today and to highlight the benefits of integrating the new cultures that are becoming part of life in Ireland today.
ii) To use sport and cultural events to bring together people from different cultures and backgrounds.
iii) To promote a positive attitude towards people from different ethnic backgrounds.
iv) To increase the discussion and debate about racism, discrimination and xenophobia.

indymedia had hoped to have a stall or table up at the tournament but we dident get it fully together, sorry for that, next time.......

I take it you don't go to too many eircom league games. I on the other hand have been to scores of games and not once have I seen idiots throwing bananas or making monkey noises. Which games have you been to?
It is interesting that these "asylum seekers" have no fear of worldwide publicity and having their photos posted on websites - freely accessible to the entire world.
i went to it early saturday morning, and already there were teams playing 20 minute matches. There were teams from lots of different places Fatima, Amnesty, Kilkenny Asylum seekers,Spirasi, Ennis, Roma support group, Rainbow centre Rialto, Pavee Point, Africans in Ireland Galway. It was impressive to see Sari had organised to get all these people in one place to have games of football.
Many of the teams had any got together in the past few weeks and were embarrased at their atrocious playing but still had a chance to win the plate if not the overall competition as you heard in the many of these teams play in the night league? And sari supports a team in Crumlim during the year.
it might have been a sorta charity event but there still plenty of cursing for the sideline..
I was a bit nervous just walking up and talking to strangers, so I approached an Irish guy in football strip and introduced myself someone from an online internet newspaper called indymedia Ireland... he recgonised the name cos he was a guard from Bray :) a communtiy liason officer in fact. He had only joined the team to play the game last week so he pointed me towards another man who was egging on a team, he was a ethnic liason? officer from Dun Laoghaire town who's station had sponsored the team of guards and young men from the Old School hostel in Dun Laoghaire to play here today, explaining how he got to know the lads by bringing them on outings seeing touristic spots he hardly seen himself before.Their team had eon well in night league and recently traveleld to Belgium to play in tournament there.There was also a team there from the Gardai National Immigration Bureua and others.
I talked to people about there work with the guys training computers differents centres and gave them printflares as example of the site.aswell as dunk and I writing reports for indymedia we hope and invited people there to write in their owns words about the weekend of football and their lives in general...

One "sin papales" has been deported every 5 minutes since January 1st 2004.
that's twelve an hour. (or one football team)

Spain, Italy and Portugal are the three entry points to the EU with the most hopefuls looking for work.
Ireland doesn't have a problem.
In fact Ireland isn't doing enough to share the burden of absorbing migrant workers with it's partner states of the EU. So redouble your efforts and get them to "play ball".

Fair point (though unbelievable and unsupported by any eveidence) However, last I checked, This board was concerned with Ireland.
Our deportation record barely amounts to one deportation per day whilst immigration runs to tens of thousands every year not including illegal immigrants.
Well Mr Eircom league supporter I don't know what games you go to either if you haven't heard any racist abuse or monkey chants at the games.St Pats fans are renowned for it as are Waterford and ive also heard Finn Harps fans doling it out aswell.Do you not remember Hasselbaink getting a banana chucked at him when Holland played Ireland in Landsdowne road?

Are you arguing that the Spaniards ought to have let all those "sin papales" in?
If so, what effect would that have, not least on those legitimately in the country?
It also has implications for Ireland in that it proves that there has to be some form of control on who can enter and stay. It is a difficult problem but one that has to be confronted, and with commonsense not irrationality from either extreme; ie. those who demand that no-one be let in, and those who beleive in a completely open door policy.

Why? Is Spain directly analogous to Ireland? Why would it be a problem to suddenly have extra people eating, working, making, joking, sleeping and singing? Add to this that they will surely be starting families with Irish people and it seems like a great benefit to the country that we're missing.
Because every state needs to control the number and type of people who enters.
If someone comes here as a refugee from war and oppression and I accept that there are many in that position then they are entitled to asylum. Likewise if someone comes here to study and work. However, when someone comes here illegally and engages in crime as I witness daily from those selling drugs, running prostitution and protection rackets then they should be expelled.
I can't see how anyone could have a problem with that.
Yes, nor why anyone could honestly deny that in this increasing populated and grossly unequal world of ours that one Country ( especially this size of this) has to limit numbers from overloading the whole shebang.
Much ‘anti-racism’ defies basic logic and reason. Hence it's failure to convince anyone with a reasonable, balanced and averagely intelligent outlook.
