A U.S. harpist based in Dublin has confirmed she will play the harp outside the Embassy on Saturday as names of the dead of NYC, Afghanista and Iraq are read.
About 50 people formed a somber circle near the Iowa Judicial Branch
Building on Thursday to remember the more than 1,000 American soldiers
killed in Iraq.
The 15 Iowans among the war dead were given special recognition, their
images held up on large posters with names, ages and dates of death.
The vigil was one of about 900 nationwide organized by Win Without War
coalition and the liberal political group MoveOn.org.
The judicial building was chosen, in part, so that the gong-like
Japanese bell could be rung throughout the silent protest, said
organizer Kathleen McQuillen of the American Friends Service Committee.
She told those gathered that "these are lives that need to be
remembered, for whatever their hopes and their intents were."
McQuillen then invited others to share their thoughts.
After a period of silence, peace activists, Vietnam veterans and others
took turns, at times airing their political frustration.
At the end of the vigil, Melanie Wenzel of Des Moines rang the bell 10
times for the American soldiers lost. The duty was especially
meaningful for Wenzel: Her son, Army Pfc. Zach Lynch, suffered severe
burns in a car bomb attack last week in Mosul.
"My first instinct is to say he'll be fine, but on the other hand, will
he?" she asked. "The psychological can be just as damaging as the
physical. "I'm not here for a political statement," she added.
"Tonight, I'm here for the people. It's absolutely tragic
