Peaceful protest at Israeli Embasy

category international | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Wednesday August 11, 2004 01:44author by Justin Morahan - Peace People (ind) Report this post to the editors

Let Vanunu go

Non-violent protest at the Israeli Embassy, Friday,13th, for whistle-blower Mordechai Vanunu.

Mordechai Vanunu, though freed in the full light of the world's media on April 21st last, is restricted in his freedom by the Israeli government.

The most serious restraint on him is that he is not allowed to leave Israel as he wishes to do. He has applied to the Irish government for asylum here but cannot leave Israel,
where he lives under virtual house arrest in St George's Anglican Church , Jerusalem, where he obtained sanctuary.

He spent 18 years in prison for a nuclear-free world - now he needs our help to ensure that freedom means freedom.

The non-violent protest will take place Friday, 13 August, from 4 to 7 p.m. or you may wish to go there at a different time yourself.

When has there ever been a violent protest at the Israeli Embassy? Why is Justin calling for a peaceful one? Is this some implicit criticism of Solidarity groups who have organised previous protests?

i noticed that too, i think its just a language thing.... he's probably referring to it in a more international way then we think and referring to the type of action vanunu and his ilk take...

Ireland should evict Israel and get the ball rolling as other countrys will follow!!!!
Why do we persist in allowing them to stay in their houses whilst they crush other peoples. Its sickenning to think that they are getting the red carpet treatment from the government. Irish people fought for years to get away from an oppresive regime and they are welcoming in another. Maybe they fear that America would be upset if Israel were asked to leave

Long before we would ever be able to get a full-on boycott of Israeli goods, and cutting-off of diplomatic relations to Israel, we might be able to disrupt the flow of weapons technologies from Ireland to that country. Analog, and perhaps one or two other companies (names, anyone?) have contracts with the Israeli military, that part of Israel which is most uncontroversially rotten. CRH and perhaps other Irish firms are implicated in Israel's so-called "security wall".
Chomsky posted an interesting article on his blog related this: "South Africa Style Sanctions Against Israel?" http://blog.zmag.org/ttt/archives/000492.html

Simply a description. How in the name of Adam could it be a criticism of previous protests?
Maybe if all non-violent protests weren't shy about it, and described themselves as non-violent it would pre-empt the kind of Deirdre Tynan articles that damned the Mayday protests before they began, in the eyes of many.
Obviously my description of it as non-violent has damned the Vanunu protest in the minds of some whose support would have been most welcome.
That's a pity.
