Bikes against Bush raring to go!!! : Critical Mass for Peace route finalised

category national | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Tuesday June 08, 2004 17:32author by St.John - Bikes against Bush Critical Mass for Peaceauthor email bushcycle at yahoo dot ieauthor phone 087 2820906 Report this post to the editors

We've been busy sorting out all the bits and pieces for the cycle ride to Shannon to 'celebrate' the arrival of George W. Bush, the baddest president of them all, and we've finalised our route!

The cycle will be an enjoyable and worthwhile trip: this isn't an endurance test. The pace will be relaxed, and so will the people. The idea is to cycle for up to three hours in the morning, and three in the afternoon with a nice long lunch in the middle :-). Many days will be shorter than this, and we're pretty sure none will be longer and we'll be taking back roads for almost the entire journey. So join us!
We'll be camping along the way, in various different campsites and places provided by supportive groups and individuals.

So here's the route:

Saturday 19th Dublin to Straffan
Sunday 20th Straffan to Kildare town
Monday 21st Kildare to Portlaoise (Agaboe)
Tuesday 22nd Portlaoise to Roscrea
Wednesday 23rd Roscrea to Killaloe
Thursday 24th Killaloe to Peace Camp

Each time we come to a reasonably large town, we'll talk to people about the visit of Bush, distribute leaflets and try to encourage them to join the protest Demos in Shannon on Friday the 25th and Saturday the 26th.
We'll also encourage them to join our entourage, even if only for a day or an afternoon, and add to the carnival atmosphere!

Go get involved, get active, healthy environmentally concious and alive!!!
Come along to the meeting next week (details to follow)

Police dispersed a monthly bicycle protest in Montreal last week, arresting at least one person and handing out $500 in fines. The "critical mass" consisted of approximately 50 cyclists taking up one lane of a street in Montreal. Using the slogan "we're not blocking traffic, we are traffic", critical masses are a form of grassroots protest that aims to direct critical attention at unsustainable forms of transportation, particularly cars.

According to eyewitnesses, police forced several cyclists from their bicycles, issued fines, and threatened other cyclists with fines if they did not disperse. According to cyclists, this was the first time that Montreal police had forced a critical mass to disperse.

3 Days to get to Portlaoise? That's not just "relaxed", it's positively lazy! I could walk it quicker, even with my gammy leg.
I did the 'group cycling thingy' myself - a couple of times to Portlaoise, out on a Saturday and back on the Sunday, so there is no excuse for anyone who is available not to take part in this, It's too easy.

The Security Council of the UN voted overwhelmingly to recognise the new Iraqi government!
The new Prime Minister and President have both been given unambigious legitimacy by the International Community!
The Iraqi Government has given its approval to the US military presence in order to defeat terrorism!
In late January Iraqis will vote for the first time to create a broad secular democracy!

What the hell are you protesting against?

You protesting against the Iraqis?

"been given unambigious legitimacy by the International Community."

real ligitimacy is given by the people this goverment claims to represent, not Dubya.

Oh and there is that other small issue that the coalition has over 250,000 troups in the country . One might say that they have a hell alot of influence

And the UN is completing the task of digging its own grave. If it had any democracy then US and Israeli leaders would be facing international trials for war crimes. Instead the internal structure of the UN is undemocratic (a toothless General Assembly talks and real decisions are made by the Security Council over which the "Great Powers" have veto powers).

Excellent to see Critical Mass doing this tour!

The Security Council VOTED to endorse the legitimacy of the Iraqi government!

Are you REALLY stupid?

I forgot Voting=Democracy. Whoever does the voting (whether it's the people actually effected or not), whether or not there's a real choice given to them to vote on and however intimidated, bribed or otherwise coerced into voting a particular way.

Grow up.

Best wishes and deep apologies from an American for inflicting on the world this monsterous scourge on humanity, George Bush. I didn't vote for him and neither did the majority. Our bigest mistake was in not taking to the streets the very day the election was stolen. I wish you the best of luck in your protest. Our shouts of protest are generally unheard and unseen...we are confined in "free-speech" zones well out of the sight and hearing of the thief. We look to you and others in this world to do what we no longer can. Shout from the rooftops Ireland! We'll hear you. Let freedom ring!!
