DCW & Friends are exploring creating the last scene from MACBETH while president George W Bush resides and Dromoland castle on June 26th.
We've got a powerful paranoid king on his last legs. We've got him in a castle. We've got the prophecy of the witch that his reign will end when the woods come to the castle. We've got a copy of Polanski's Macbeth. We've got peaceniks and shrubbery.

Jump To Comment: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9I mean is there something that I'm missing here or is the Catholic Worker Movement really trying to come across as a bunch of culties? I respect you for your activism but Ciaron, why do you always have to come off so weird? The CWM has potential but not if its headed by a crank.
Viad - dude. I'm starting to get the feeling you are stalking me around the cyber-trail. See Abbie Hoffman and the attempted levitation of the Pentagon in '68. (Read Abbie's "Soon to be a Major Motion Picture"). View Polanski's Macbeth, rent it fom your vid store.
The movement loses a lot of folks because the tactics are boring and repetitive. It's an experiment, loosen up!
DCW are NOT on a recruitment drive. We have hit a critical mass (pardon the pun!) numberswise. Mainstream acceptability was the first thing we jettisoned when we got serious about revolutionandnonviolen resistance.
Glad to see that someone is looking at the possibility of crash space. This may be crucial in getting the numbers.
I intend to 'go sick' on the Friday and travel down from Dublin. I'm sure many others are planning to go to Shannon too, and somewhere to bed down will be more than welcome.
Keep up the good work.
hi ciaran and co
hope we can work together
can the -bush walk- fit in with your stuff
Act V.
scene viii
the scottish play:-
-Another part of the field.
Enter MACBETH
MACBETH
Why should I play the Roman fool, and die
On mine own sword? whiles I see lives, the gashes
Do better upon them.
Enter MACDUFF (holding beer)
MACDUFF
Turn, hell-hound, turn!
MACBETH
Of all men else I have avoided thee:
But get thee back; my soul is too much charged
With blood of thine already.
MACDUFF
I have no words:
My voice is in my sword: thou bloodier villain
Than terms can give thee out!
They fight
MACBETH
Thou losest labour:
As easy mayst thou the intrenchant air
With thy keen sword impress as make me bleed:
Let fall thy blade on vulnerable crests;
I bear a charmed life, which must not yield,
To one of woman born.
MACDUFF
Despair thy charm;
And let the angel whom thou still hast served
Tell thee, Macduff was from his mother's womb
Untimely ripp'd.
MACBETH
Accursed be that tongue that tells me so,
For it hath cow'd my better part of man!
And be these juggling fiends no more believed,
That palter with us in a double sense;
That keep the word of promise to our ear,
And break it to our hope. I'll not fight with thee.
MACDUFF
Then yield thee, coward,
And live to be the show and gaze o' the time:
We'll have thee, as our rarer monsters are,
Painted on a pole, and underwrit,
'Here may you see the tyrant.'
MACBETH
I will not yield,
To kiss the ground before young Malcolm's feet,
And to be baited with the rabble's curse.
Though Birnam wood be come to Dunsinane,
And thou opposed, being of no woman born,
Yet I will try the last. Before my body
I throw my warlike shield. Lay on, Macduff,
And damn'd be him that first cries, 'Hold, enough!'
Exeunt, fighting. Alarums
Retreat. Flourish. Enter, with drum and colours, MALCOLM, SIWARD, ROSS, the other Thanes, and Soldiers
MALCOLM
I would the friends we miss were safe arrived.
SIWARD
Some must go off: and yet, by these I see,
So great a day as this is cheaply bought.
MALCOLM
Macduff is missing, and your noble son.
ROSS
Your son, my lord, has paid a soldier's debt:
He only lived but till he was a man;
The which no sooner had his prowess confirm'd
In the unshrinking station where he fought,
But like a man he died.
SIWARD
Then he is dead?
ROSS
Ay, and brought off the field: your cause of sorrow
Must not be measured by his worth, for then
It hath no end.
SIWARD
Had he his hurts before?
ROSS
Ay, on the front.
SIWARD
Why then, God's soldier be he!
Had I as many sons as I have hairs,
I would not wish them to a fairer death:
And so, his knell is knoll'd.
MALCOLM
He's worth more sorrow,
And that I'll spend for him.
SIWARD
He's worth no more
They say he parted well, and paid his score:
And so, God be with him! Here comes newer comfort.
Re-enter MACDUFF, with MACBETH's head
MACDUFF
Hail, king! for so thou art: behold, where stands
The usurper's cursed head: the time is free:
I see thee compass'd with thy kingdom's pearl,
That speak my salutation in their minds;
Whose voices I desire aloud with mine:
Hail, King of Scotland!
ALL
Hail, King of Scotland!
Flourish
MALCOLM
We shall not spend a large expense of time
Before we reckon with your several loves,
And make us even with you. My thanes and kinsmen,
Henceforth be earls, the first that ever Scotland
In such an honour named. What's more to do,
Which would be planted newly with the time,
As calling home our exiled friends abroad
That fled the snares of watchful tyranny;
Producing forth the cruel ministers
Of this dead butcher and his fiend-like queen,
Who, as 'tis thought, by self and violent hands
Took off her life; this, and what needful else
That calls upon us, by the grace of Grace,
We will perform in measure, time and place:
So, thanks to all at once and to each one,
Whom we invite to see us crown'd at Scone.
Flourish. Exeunt
(it's all pre-Brit English Hun bollox)
If anyone has a few moments could they please attempt to clarify a few points for me.
1 polanski's macbeth- obviously some cinematic adaptation of the original play attributed to William Shakespeare. why this version?
2 use of the final scenes to make some point about the defeat of what, speaking in terms of the world of the text, is the depostion of a vicious despot who for much of the play has exercised his will by pure force to the detriment of innocent lives..(yeh I kinda see where your going with it.)
however: the character of Macbeth is not so simple. Indeed there have been very convincing critical analyses made of the final scenes of the play which argue for Macbeth as some form of hero in his final moments. He wont "play the roman fool" ie be the agent of his own destruction. Even when the witch's prophecy proves false when faced by Macduff who is "not of woman born" he fights on.
Yes Macbeth is a fairly nasty piece of work but is he suitable within the context you wish to use him?
Thanx for the feedback, we'll take this into our meeting tonight. If you know of a suitable quote from the play ...fo a banner for MacBush..post it up with Act & Reference lines.
George W would be the last to full on his sword...can't see any Tricky Dicky waving and helicopter exits on the horizon!
still hoping the bush walk can help you, prob walk all day on fri now, to connect there
any further with the "leprachaun" block?
im trying to get a celi on at the front line, listening to a lot of planxty today
anyone connected with the gaa crowd/ trad music crowd
also trying to get my gaelic doom metal mates
http://www.maelmordha.com/
to come and play some music for us- full on blue face, long hair, celtic warriors- hopefully make a music vid from it
it looks like we will leave on fri morning and walk the "bushwalk" to hook up with ye- stop off in ennis for an indymedia screening- and hope to have a beach screening on the thr night- the change of date seems more practical- we get there when george is there, we plug in with ye
prob also head down for an ennis indymedia gig on sun 20th, to get things going- anyone with contacts send them on
etaoins well and things coming along nicely with the black blankets- can this be incororoted into ambush plan, if not already done so- just take a few minutes and will be v effective image
anyway, up with people, fair play to ye, see you dancing on the streets
lastly putting out a massive call out for ::dancing girls:: sure way of getting all the heads down
id like if you could share some views about relationship between art and politics here
