I'll bet they are! Nice middle class boys and girls, archeology and sociology students and suchlike with addresses in Blackrock and similar areas. (See court report in Irish Times yesterdaty for details) Oppressed by horrible culchie guards! And them to be locked up in CLOVERHILL of all places with the scum of the earth for company in the cells! Praise the lord and pass the vaseline. I mean, why couldn't they do their porridge in Castlerea with the other Blackrock boys? Sure they might even be able to get a rugby team together!
Don't worry, Liz. From the brief pen pictures in the IT yesterday, I'd say they're well and good for the €500.
fuck off skeptic cunt. You obviously believe the mainstream media cause you are as thick as shit as well as skeptic. I'm working class like my mates inside you fucking spineless little turd. Why didn't you join the filth in the sewers you self important worthless pratt.
Hi, no borders!
Do you dispute the factual information published in the "commercial" media regarding the addresses and student status of the arrested?
If yes, then you've obviously exposed another capitalist conspiracy. Go to the top of the class.
If no, then you must agree inferences can be drawn from same. Of course, like any inference, it may be right or wrong and is open to being superceded by more authoritative data.
Except your own inferences, of course. Which are to be treated as gospel at all times.
This might be true of some of those arrested but it is not true of all. DGN people have been standing bail for people unable to get anyone else to do it.
It's not that surprising that many of those arrested were from better off backgrounds. They probably had less of an idea that the cops would indeed batter and arrest you even if all you were doing was standing your ground or protesting the treatment of others. Those from less well off backgrounds had a better idea of what the cops are really like because they have seen how they behave in their estates.
None of this should undermine support for those arrested. Whatever their background they were there on the day in solidarity with the rest of us and deserve to be supported.
you are just a fucking troll, skeptic, and your brainless comments still are just that. Are you Garda. Who cares Ireland Indymedia is extremely trolled all over by reactionaries, racists, soap box republicans, parochial bigots, and just general nazi gits. My last posting as you are not capable of any informed debate anyway - that means you - skeptic and cohorts ( probably also icludes posting screws, squaddies, pigs, journos etc.
Why don't you go pick on someone your own intellectual size.
Hello again, no borders!
If I am just a "fucking troll", then you took the bait big time, didn't you?????????
Oh, and what's with using the slang term for the female genitalia as a form of vulgar abuse? Didn't think THAT was intellectually respectable around here of all places......
As for "My last posting as you are not capable of any informed debate anyway", nice to see you have a well developed sense of irony. I presume one is capable of "informed debate" only when one agrees totally with your own view of the world? Or does "informed debate" consist of hurling abuse whenever anybody disagrees with you?
EG "fuck off"
"skeptic cunt."
"you are as thick as shit"
"you fucking spineless little turd"
"you self important worthless pratt"
"your brainless comments"
Oops, i forgot; people who disagree with you must be "reactionaries, racists, soap box republicans, parochial bigots, and just general nazi gits" so that's all right then, let's throw all the toys out of the pram.
Can you not accept that some people have different views to your own about how best to increase the stock of human happiness. And that this site's policy is "Indymedia Ireland is run in an open and free atmosphere. We welcome participation and contributions from everyone who feels they have something constructive to add."
Joe, you make some good points and I accept that not ALL those arrested were naive middle class students. You're also right about Gardai behaviour in working class estates. However, you must also take into account the extreme violence directed AT the Gardai in such areas AND the political failure to provide resources for more enlightened law enforcement. The ordinary cop on patrol does a very difficult job and, most of the time does it very well.
As for Saturday, bottom lines comes from the "http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=64869 " thread elsewhere on this site: "Some of us who wished to confront the decision to prevent our protest from going ahead then calmly formed organised lines behind a banner, locked arms and marched and pushed through the first line of police"
You push me, that's an assault. This is assault, plain and simple. Commit an assault on any police force, prepare to take the consequence................
or plain clothed police in the crowds together with friends of police in the crowds suggests that a concerted state led campaign to present a legitimate protest planned against the European Union as presently led in Dublin as a riot, was taken as in invitation to social disorder.
If one even inadvertently confronts a policeman coming out of his annexe to secure release for other protesters against teh back drop of prison riots in the prelude to announcing of six new prisons to be built, one indeed must prepare for what is met, done, said and acheived.
If one as is a civil and social right, supports a mobilisation in the Phoenix park which by common right is open to all, and that mobilisation is concertedly predicted in terms of confrontation and riot, then where does the responsibility lie for the facts?
The Facts being:-
consistent placing of inaccurate articles in all mainstream press.
inaccurate reporting of an open assembly by a east european specialist with certain associations in the mainstream press.
the presence of known right wing agitators in a Left and Pacifist demonstration.
deliberate targeting by police of members of the public with media equipment.
the lapse of the national security guard in other areas of the country.
The Power of the Media is not be understimated in telling most ordinary people what to do.
Now if you think, the riot was caused by internet sites such as this, then the power of the mainstream "proper" Media might just have caused the War.
That's if you're into "relative values".
Give us the Irish Media for one week,
and we could:-
put a man on the moon,
bring the BVM Mary back to Knock in a Stealth,
print Sinead O connor's picture every day.
Forget the TV pages,
Tell you the truth about Thatching Britain and Mister Blair "two" and the Special Relationship, and the quite unpredicted power of the Leaving Certificate reading sylabus to shape the distant future of our nation.
and Convince you all quite pithily that your natural party of government is a reconstructed fascist party which straddles several legitimate political party organisations to your added confusion and lessened democratic choice.
But you know that.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion. That is a pretty pathetic outburst from skeptic.
The democratic right to protest publicly is at stake here.
. These people could easily have stayed at home studying for their exams or whatever but in
stead they decided to take to the streets to let the EU know that they have copped on to their
exploitative policies
e.g. Privatisation. Today we've seen the good old Irish two tier justice system in operation...
...No bail because of the serious nature of the charges!!!! so says Judge Coughlan,
well the good old judge knows best....but a pervert or his ilk would have no problem getting
bail....I mean is'nt the latter
far less serious than using abusive
language or not moving on whan the gaurds told you to???
Best Wishes to those decent people arrested on Saturday.......
Who does this judge think he is fooling. 'Behaviour likely to lead to breach of the peace' is the most minor public order offence you can be charged with. I was done under it years ago when it was part of the Dublin Metropolitan Police act. If convicted it carried a maximum of a 2 pound fine!!
When arrested I was talking to a cop in the station about it. He explained that it was a handy catch all charge that almost anyone could be done for. For instance he said if you were wearing a badge that someone else might take offence to, and so this might lead to a breach of the peace, you could be done under it. He said the DMP act was great as you could arrest people, bring them down the station and easley dig out something to charge them for. He reckoned this was a great laugh.
The only difference between the DMP and the POA is that under the POA you can actually receive jail time for such a farcial charge. But serious, come on now. This is an OUTRAGE and aimed not just at us anarchists but at anyone anywhere who ever thinks of protesting at anything. Get up off your knees or you can be next.
