The Gardai were informed of the plans for May Day over a month ago. These plans include meeting at Dame Street at 12 noon and holding some street theatre, music and speakers and then marching across O Connell Bridge and along the Quays to the Phoenix park where there will be a Carnival to celebrate Multiculturalism with music from KingSativa, Soukous Allstars, Africkico and others.
Rory Hearne, May Day Carnival organiser said “It is now being suggested to us by the Gardai that our right to march to the Phoenix Park and hold the carnival could be restricted. Our plans for the day are very similar to the outline of the Feb 15th Anti-War march last year and are completely peaceful as are all groups planning to protest on the day. The 25 EU heads of state will be in Farmleigh house and we have a democratic right to march and express our concerns over the EU governments’ policies of racism, war and privatisation.”
He further added “Patricia Mckenna, Green Party MEP, Mick O Rielly (ATGWU) and Richard Boyd Barrett (IAWM) will be joining us to demand our right to march tomorrow when we meet the Gardai. We want a peaceful day and feel that our right to march should be respected. We will be releasing a statement after the meeting”
