Cork anti-war protest on Thursday, 22 April

CORK ANTI-WAR PROTEST ON THURSDAY, 22nd, April, at 7pm in Daunt Square

The Cork Anti-War Campaign and Anti-War Ireland are calling on people to join a demonstration this Thursday 22 April at 7pm in Daunt Square in solidarity with Iraqi people bearing the brunt of US/UK military operations in Iraq.

Chairperson of Cork Anti-War Campaign, Dr Fintan Lane, has called on the government to condemn the "violence and brutality of the US occupation of Iraq".

According to Dr Lane, "The US military onslaught on Falluja has resulted in the deaths of more than 600 people, the majority of whom are now known to have been civilians. This collective punishment was supposedly in retaliation for the killing and mutilation of four private security contractors in the city, but it is clear that the real point was to use overwhelming force to indicate who is boss in the 'new' Iraq. In the process hundreds of innocent men, women and children have been killed. This is an outrage and we demand that our government both condemn this violence and disengage our state from the US war machine by withdrawing the use of Shannon Airport from the Pentagon."

Cork Anti-War Campaign hopes that Cork people, angered by the scenes from Baghdad, will join this week's protest, and asks them to bring home-made placards or other symbols of opposition to the war in Iraq.

The vigil will be decamping from Daunt Square at some stage to picket and lay a wreath at the Raytheon office on South Mall. We may drop by Fianna Fail HQ on the way.
