Why are climate alarmists so impervious to facts, so averse to rational cost-benefit analysis? It has all the hallmarks of a religious cult, says James Allan. They can't let it go because it gives meaning to their lives.

There's a climate emergency, so cough up, say insurers. It hasn't stopped them raking in billions, notes Chris Morrison. And no wonder: weather losses are actually down compared to 35 years ago. Time for a bit of honesty?

Low cost solutions to Ireland’s waste crisis available

Dublin, Friday 21 November 2003 … A panel of international waste experts today told the ‘Low Cost Solutions to Ireland’s Waste Crisis’ conference that Ireland is paying dearly for its management of waste in an unsafe and unsustainable way and that a huge opportunity is being missed that could benefit Ireland as a whole.

Mr Matthew Pumfrey, who has been involved in the development of zero waste strategies in New Zealand, outlined the opportunities for Ireland’s entrepreneurs in developing new resource recovery infrastructure. Zero waste is a proven winner with political and public support developing all over the world.

He told of his work with some of the world’s largest multi national corporations such as Mitsubishi who now have a zero waste policy and are working towards achieving this.

Mr Luc Klunder, an engineer with Gicom Composting Systems, detailed his experience with design, construction and commissioning of municipal waste composting facilities throughout Europe. Organic waste which is a major problem in landfills is in fact, if treated properly, an ecologically valuable material as a soil enricher and a CO2 buffer.

A spokesperson for the hosting organisations called for the necessary local government infrastructure to be put in place to give an outlet to the public’s separated waste; educational programmes to inform the public that it is possible to recycle most of their waste; and support for recyclate market development.

The Conference, Low Cost Solutions to Ireland’s Waste Crisis, was jointly organised by VOICE, Zero Waste Alliance Ireland and An Taisce the National Trust for Ireland.
