Nunca Mais action in galway

category galway | environment | news report author Tuesday December 09, 2003 17:21author by karen eliot Report this post to the editors

pics of the aniversery of the oil slick in Galiza

On sunday 16th of november an action took place to remind people of the oil tanker that sank off the Galician coast. One year later the mess still hasn't been cleaned up.
chant.jpg

On the 13th Nover 2002, the Prestige, an oil tanker carrying 70, 000 metric tons of crude oil, was seriously damaged 13 miles off the Galician coast. Instead of facing the situation in a competent way, the Spanish government decided to get rid of the problem directing the ship to the high seas. As a consequence of this, on the 21st of november, the tanker sank 133 miles off the Galician coast. The resulting oil slick, the biggest that ever occured in europe, stained the whole coast from portugal to france.

a year has passed without the problems being resolved. It will take decades to repair the economic and environmental damage, particulary with the sunk ship still dumping oil and acting as a menace for the fore-coming times. Instead of buying anti-contamination ships, the spanish govenment spends public money on planes and shells to kill the Iraqis - another oil related issue.....

In the face of this disaster, the Galician society revolted and stood up shouting: NUNCA MAIS!

NUNCA MAIS is an umbrella shared by thousands of individuals and organisations which don't want to be drowned under such amouts of oil. NUNCA MAIS is the non-violent weapon of out civil society. It was the ordinary people, not the political class, who cleaned up our beaches with home-made tools and 70,000 tons of courage and dignity.

Nunca mais demands the declaration of Galicia as a crisis area and the provision of funds needed to compensate for the serious economic, environmental , social and health conseqences brought about by the sinister. We also demand the starting of prevention mechanisms to make sure that this will never happen again.

The rally started at eyre square, through shop st, to the ocean. sorry it took so long to get the story up. karen eliot bringing you last month's news today.

meu pobo son botas de goma!

it is reported in the Spanish Press today:
The owner of the Oil in The Prestige has refused to accept responsibility for sharing the cost of the fuel's removal by Repsol and the Spanish State from the Prestige wreck which lies in deep water. It has waived it's responsibility "because it was the wrong decision to direct the ship to deep water".

It is thought the Spanish State will sue the Oil company.
