Belfast Anti War Movement

category antrim | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Saturday November 29, 2003 11:15author by Davy Carlin - W/Belfast SWPauthor email carlindavid at hotmail dot com Report this post to the editors

Last nights protest against Tim Collins

On a wet miserable Friday night about 70 protesters braved the elements to 'welcome' Tim Collins. Trade unionists who had played the leading role in the days mass walkouts of civil servants joined other anti war activists at Queens University.

Below is a summary of the report in todays Ulster Newsletter.

Anti War protesters gave British army officer, Col Tim Collins a raw reception last nights at a Queens University alumni dinner where he was guest speaker.

An arrangement agreed with police beforehand for leaflets to be handed out behind the tight security cordon { handed out behind it anyway} was called of as protesters stormed across the front lawn of the university that had been of limits. Around a dozen security staff with police held back the protesters at the cordon.

Anine Fox spokesperson from the Belfast Anti War Movement said,

'I think it is important to be here because Tim Collins is here. And I think we as anti war activists have to make our voices heard,'. Bush and Blair lied about the existence of weapons of mass destruction'.

A spokesperson for Queens said the event was organised by the graduates association, not the university and that the association was making no comment.

An MOD spokesperson said Tim Collins was atteneding the event as a 'private individual'.

Davy, can youi please note when posting newswire items that there are options available for region. As all stories are of course of national or even international concern, each story should be given the regional label most appropriate to its content. There is no additional prominence given to National stories. This story, for example, should have been labelled Antrim, as the event being reported on took place there.

Using correct labels makes it easier for Indymedia users to browse stories at a later date. It also means that editors don't have to spend time changing the labels.

Thanks for contributing to Indymedia!

Is some of Belfast not in Down?

There should really be a Belfast option.

There should also be a Northern Ireland option. Is the Assembly elections really national news?

I would agree with that, that there should be a Belfast slot

IMD reader: "There should also be a Northern Ireland option. Is the Assembly elections really national news?"

About as national as the Free State Dáil elections, i.e. not at all - but it still concerns a fair percentage of the country, and it also has repurcussions in the other 26 counties, considering the involvement of the Free State Govt and the fact that SF (among other parties) is based throughout Ireland.

We had a Northern Ireland option in the original design of the site. And republicans objected. We debated it, and I lost, and it was taken away. Events in the North should go with the particular county; something across the Six would probably have to be National.

I remember that, I objected to "Northern Ireland" but not "northern Ireland".
Not on republican or anarchist grounds, but rather on case sensitivity.
"N"orthern does not equal "n"orthern.
a Belfast section would be a really good idea.
could be "B" or "b".
:-)
