Handbill of the Galway "Nunca Mais" Movement
On the 13th of November 2002, the Prestige, an oil tanker carrying 70,000 metric tons of crude oil, was seriously damaged 13 miles off the Galician coast. Instead of facing the situation in a competent way, the Spanish government decided to get rid of the problem directing the ship to the high seas, with the hope that it would enter the jurisdictional waters of some other country. As a consequence, on the 21st of November, the oil tanker sank 133 miles off the Galician coast. The resulting black tide, the biggest that ever occurred in Europe, stained the whole coast from Portugal to France. The government didn't act, it was the people who had to clean up the mess. In the face of this disaster, Galician society revolted and stood up shouting, NUNCA MAIS !
WHO ARE WE ?
Nunca Mais (Never Again) was created on the 21st of November 2002. Under this movement, several hundreds of organizations and many thousands of individuals came together to protest against the Prestige disaster and the shameful government handling of it.
WHAT DO WE WANT ?
Nunca Mais demands the declaration of Galicia as a crisis area and the provision of funds to compensate for the serious economic, environmental, social and health consequences brought about by this disaster. We also demand the inception of prevention measures to make sure that this will NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN.
On the 16th of November 2003, a demonstration will take place in Santiago de Compostela (the capilal of Galicia) in order to remind the public that a year has passed without the problems being resolved. It will take several years to repair the economic and environmental damage, particularly with the sunk ship still seeping oil for the foreseeable future. However, the emotional damage will never be repaired; Galiza has been stricken by oil spills more often than any other coast in the world. The names of these ships are engraved on our memory forever: Polycommander, Urquiola, Cason, Aegean Sea and Prestige.
