Anarchist Discussion Group: "Bad Thoughts": Bin-Tax demo and anarchists

category dublin | bin tax / household tax / water tax | event notice author Monday October 13, 2003 17:52author by redflaremist Report this post to the editors

"Bad Thoughts": Why arent more anarchists involved in the bix tax demos? New anarchist/autonomous/anti capitalist discussion group.

Bad Books presents Bad Thoughts

The first in what will hopefully be a regular discussion group.

This week the discussion will centre around the recent anti bin tax demonstrations. Many anarchists in Dublin have not become involved in the blockading of trucks in residential areas; why is this? Is it because that such an issue is not seen as "sexy", whereas other issues such as anti war direct actions and reclaim the streets are? Or is it because it is tax is something some anarchists see as an extension of the state, so trying to reform it is taking their eyes off the prize?

Hopefully the discussion will also branch into the "lifestyle anarchism vs. social anarchism" debate. Are lifestyle anarchists ghettoising themselves? Are social anarchists too work-oriented?

Chekov Feeney from the Workers Solidarity Movement will be discussing why he thinks its important for anarchists of all stripes to get involved with the anti bin tax demonstrations.

Suggested background reading material: http://www.spunk.org/library/writers/bookchin/sp001512/

The discussion takes place this Wednesday October 15th at 7.30pm.

Please ring Keith on 086 3363743 or Bad Books on 087 6497340 for more information.

Any of the anarchists I know are very much involved in the blockades. Strange assertion.

loads of the non WSM anarchists are not involved whatsoever with the bin tax campaign.

And some haven't been, which is fair enough. Not everybody has to have the same priorities.

Maybe cos there are far more important things to be demonstrating about? Iraq ,government corruption, abuse in the catholic church...

Now that is a totally ridiculous statement! Do you have a full list of all the anarchists in Dublin? And have you got a little asterisk beside the names of the WSM or non-WSM ones?

I suspect the meeting blurb is being 'controversal' in order to encourage people to go and discuss the issue.

The main dividing line in terms of the anarchist movement in Dublin would be one of age rather then anything else. All of the anarchists I know who are older then about 25 have been involved (some very intensely). Most of those below this age have only been involved in the RTS hookup or the other big marches.

Reasons for this
1. Political (which is what the meeting concentrates on)
2. Living with parents/short term rent - you are less likely to be involved if your not the one being billed or you've only just moved into an area. Your more likely to be involved if your living in your own place and know your neighboors etc.
