Al-Jazeera Censord in Iraq

Al Jazeera off the screens in Iraq

Al Jazeera is going to be off the screens in Iraq for 2 weeks, because their footage is upsetting people. This was reported on Nuacht RTE this afternoon. I don't know if the 6pm RTE or TV3 news will cover it. For anyone who can understand Irish TG4 news is at 7pm.

because they 'are upsetting people'? Is this the OFFICIAL reason? Or is there some ostensible reason?

More info please...

I read it on the news section of RTE's Aertel.... sorry, I can't remember if there were any more details...

This is a rough translation of what was on TG 4 news.

They mention the speeches in the UN, and that more people were killed today in Iraq, and then they go to the story about censorship. This is what they said:

Meanwhile the new government in Baghdad, that America appointed, are shutting off freedom of speech in that country. By government order, there is a restriction of 2 weeks being placed on broadcasting the stations Al-Jazeera and al-Arabiya, because it is said that they are causing conflict/arguments. The American army killed three today in fighting with rebels in Al Fallujah, and children were hurt....[they show a shot of a badly injured man and child and then go back to the UN].

I heard that one of the heads of Al-Jazeera was arrested. Does anyone else have any details on that?

They may not be completely banned, though very restricted. The article above says:

'Iraq's Governing Council said on Tuesday the stations were prohibited from covering official activities in Iraq for two weeks.

It said the action was taken as a warning to broadcasters who incite anti-US violence.

"Al-Jazeera and al-Arabiya will temporarily be excluded from any coverage of Governing Council activities or official press conferences, and correspondents of the two channels will not be allowed to enter ministries or government offices for two weeks," the council said in a statement. '

These channels were braodcasting images of masked gunmen brandishing weapons and exhorting the people of Iraq to rise up against the infidels (or some such mediaeval rubbish).

Channel 4 have been broadcasting a documentary on that notorious group of masked gunmen and state sponsored assassins, the SAS. I dont hear any objection to that?

http://www.cpa-iraq.org/regulations/CPAORD14.pdf

These above two relate to the control of telecommunications and prohibited media activity in US/Uk ruled Iraq.

There's also a rake of Bremer's speehces available which are oft cringeworthy.

Im still not sure what specific reasons if any were given for this ban can anyone point me in the way of more info?
