Special Branch intimidate musician

category kerry | rights, freedoms and repression | press release author Saturday August 23, 2003 13:32author by Ailín Report this post to the editors

An All Ireland champion bagpipe player was warned by the police not to perform at a Republican Sinn Fein commemoration, the North Kerry branch of the organisation claimed today.

RSF spokesman John O'Shea from Ballylongford said that the piper had agreed to play at the annual Shortis and Scanlan commemoration in Ballybunion on 17th August last.

"However when the parade was about to assemble, and the man did not appear apologies were received," said Mr. O'Shea. "The piper had been visited earlier by the Special Branch police and their action intimidated him.

"We in RSF are used to this type of harassment from the political police but when they target members of the public hired to play at public engagements marking historic events then the line has to be drawn by all right thinking people.

"There can be no excuse for the police acting in this manner, tantamount to what would happen in Nazi Germany - the erosion of civil liberties is taking place by stealth and it is time that those concerned with human rights and fundamental freedoms examined the conduct of the political police.

"We in Republican Sinn Féin would like to apologise to all those people, locals and tourists, who attended the commemoration for the absence of the piper - this was due to police intimidation and harassment of an award winning bagpiper.

"We are now lodging a formal complaint with the Council for Civil Liberties - there can be no excuse for harassing people attending a commemoration for men who gave their lives in the cause of Irish freedom."

The Guards had a few words with the guy.
He saw the error of his ways and decided not to play.

How can anyone in their right mind call this intimidation ?

I mean after Omagh who would want to be involved with those scumbags ?

The cops should not intimidate anyone especially peaceful non violent sensitive types like republican sinn fein!

Bungling corrupt garda should keep their booze snodden noses out of other peoples buisness. It's a free democratic cuntry? if people want to listen to shite fiddledy music, they should be allowed to. People are entitled to listen to their cultural type music even if they are republican sinn fein.

And i agree who would want to have anything to do with the brit security force personnel and agent A FRU Real IRA members responsible for the omagh bomb.

Some of the morons on this, would never cease to amaze me with their plain ignorance.
People have a right to commemorate Irelands dead and during these commemorations, a piper is present to play a lament to honour the person who has made a supreme sacrifice, in dying for his country....something the above morons would never do.
And what we have is a supposeably under staffed public service, going out of their way, to intimidate a piper. Can anybody not see the irony of that!

The Special Branch had plenty of time yesterday to harass people giving out leaflets in support of Republican POWs.

A pity those resources couldnt be diverted to deal with drug-pushers. But then the Garda are also too busy harassing people who confront pushers.

what r u talking about,
rsf/cira have been heavily implicated on countless occasions with drugdealing in limerick particularly with their feuding buddies.

get real

Bullshit as you well know. The same crap is churned out about PIRA, INLA. The truth is that republicans fight drugpushers. Now crawl back into your shithole, theres a good little troll.

author by smack addicts make the best toutspublication date Mon Aug 25, 2003 13:23author address author phone Report this post to the editors

History tells us that in fact it is the state which is the biggest drug pushers ever. Agents of state/security force personnel such as the LVF, Johnny adair's C company, push smack to working class communities.

Smack addicts are very useful to the state, because they squeal like canaries, when locked up in order to get out quickly to get their next fix.

nice to see your limited vocab and intelligence reduces you to personal abuse (c)rapper.

u are surely taking the piss to suggest that inla are fighting drugpushers. open ur eyes , fella

as for cira in limerick, how did ross cantillon, and woodland those two fine upstanding members of a certain limerick drugs gang get their hands on an Ak47.
bought in in argos (c)rapper???????????????

you obviously dont live here, if you did youd see the 'brave' 'soldiers' for what they really are, mercenaries who will sell weaponry to any heroin dealer.

author by Rapperpublication date Wed Aug 27, 2003 11:07author address author phone Report this post to the editors

So its OK to attack REpublicans but not the SP! Theres more "evidence" for the SP accusation. Haugh has an unhealthy love affair with the Shannon Airport Police.

author by .publication date Wed Aug 27, 2003 19:22author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Rapper unless i am mistaken you are saying that you have made a false allegation against the SP because someone else made a false allegation against RSF/CIRA. Is that right?

author by Rapperpublication date Thu Aug 28, 2003 11:04author address author phone Report this post to the editors

So its ok to say anything you weant about Republicans but no one can criticise the SP! Dont you think thats a tiny bit hypocritical?

Why is it ok for SP members to slander RSF and the IRSM but its not ok for Republicans to respond in kind?

As I have pointed out, it is Haugh who has the unhealthy warm relationship with the Airport Cops. You could do a lot with those kind of connections.

author by .publication date Fri Aug 29, 2003 23:23author address author phone Report this post to the editors

No rapper it would not be ok for SP members to slander rsf or irsm, as far as i know they havent done so on this thread or any other.
The point remains, someone on this thread critised rsf and you responded with something that you knew was untrue.
It is not an issue of which group you attacked you should not have done it at all.
