"Another World Is Possible" - this is the rallying cry of the World Social Forum - a global process of sharing, debating, visioning, exchange, linking up, and coordination to build 'another world' – one that puts economic and social justice, and sustainability in the centre.

Since 2001, thousands of activists, trade unionists, academics, and NGOs from around the world have gathered at the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, Brazil to build an alternative to a world dominated by global capitalism and driven by profit making. The World Social Forum has grown beyond these annual meetings into an ongoing process of movement building and has become a powerful node of global organising against the ‘neoliberal’ model of capitalism.

Regional and national Social Fora have been springing up around the world and Ireland is no exception – an Irish Social Forum will be launched on 6 July, 2003. If you are interested in finding out more about the World Social Forum and the formation of the Irish Social Forum - Come join us!

- For more information on the Irish Social Forum see: www.irishsocialforum.com

- For more information on the World Social Forum see the links below. The Social Forum Charter of Principles is particularly important to have a look at, as it lays out the general principles that participating groups/regional fora should be in agreement with.

There is a social forum in Belfast that already meets with trade unionists community activists political parties etc from across Belfast is this the same kind of thing

Secondly is it true that the Irish social fourm are not mobilising for a blockade of the WEF later this year, and are calling for a counter conference or something like that instead.

Many of the activists who were involved in the Anti war movement, that is trade unionists community activists, political parties, youth student, women's and ethinic groups, solidarity campaigns etc shall be mobilising in force from N.Ireland to participate in the blockade.

Can you let us know the format of the meeting. Is there some one at the top table speaking to us, if so who are they as those who may want to attend would like to know. Thank you

As far as I know it has not been decided if the ISF will call for a demonstration or Blockade of the WEF. The idea of the Social Forum is to get as many groups from 'civil society' together to discuss issues of mutual interest.
Some organisations who may be supportive of the ISF may not agree with the tactics of Blockade and street protest. An open meeting on the 6th of July in the Teachers club will discuss this and other issues, so come along to get your say ion.

My personal opinion (for what its worth) is that the protests etc will go ahead whether the ISF backs them or not, so if this may be a devisive point within the forum why should a position be taken?

PS there is a pub quiz on in the Teachers Club this Saturday night to raise some cash for the ISF

Yes there will be a number of speakers on the platform. They will be confirmed before the end of the week. One will address the World Social Forum and the developments over the past number of years. A second speaker will address the developments in the Irish Social Forum to date. The aim of the meeting is to open the discussion to all interested across Belfast and the North East. If there are existing networks or fora then people involved in these should come along and let us know. The bottom line is that if you are interested in the Social Forum Movement, want to know more and want to get involved then come to the meeting. For morte information contact Emily Kawano at the e.mail address provided in the original article.

One should not worry about other forums {As many participants of such have been invited to attend} and it does not matter who is speaking as each will be able to put ones views. The important thing is that it is happening after been aired several weeks ago amongst trade union activists whom were active against the war in Iraq. Diversity is strength and we should also find some commonality.
