electronic voting

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday June 11, 2003 16:36author by elvis Report this post to the editors

some of you might be interested in this

In 2002, the Irish government began the introduction of the Nedap/Powervote system, for electronic voting in the Republic of Ireland. After 5 months of research for my undergraduate thesis, I am convinced that this system poses a threat to our democracy.

The big reprt is intimidating

author by elvispublication date Wed Jun 11, 2003 16:55author address author phone Report this post to the editors

tsk ;-)
whats a just right length

basically the paper argues that the electronic voting system that the g'vment are seeking to introduce is dangerous to our democracy as it has enough failings to make the people unsure as to wheather the result was legitimate.

as its an electronic procedure the current system where by anyone can observe a count and there are independant monitors of the election will not happen. the system is closed source so we cannot verify how it works

again... its an original work and i encourage you to go make up your own mind rather than reading my summary

One of the things that I am concerned about is the inability of the voter to deliberatly spoil their ballot paper. I intended to spoil my ballot paper in next years local elections as there will only be candidates standing from the capitalist parties in my area bu the electronic system will not allow me do this. This is undemocratic as when votes are being counted the slogans written on spoilt ballots are seen by the candidates and are read out, taking this right away from voters is a disgrace and would mean that in future elections I will decide not to turnout as I would be forced to vote for the capitalist parties. I think the vote was a concession won from the capitalist class through mass struggle and now it is being taken away.

The answer to all our problems. An organised campaign to ahve a "none of the above" option included on the electronic ballot card. I have never heard any good reason why it can't be so. If people would like to try to make this happen please leave notice here

Yes a none of the above would be good but still the right of a voter to write a political slogan across the ballot has been taken away

Just as any member of the public has a right to know the exact method that any other election is counted, they must be allowed access to the source code of an electronic voting system. Otherwise, God knows what they could have in there.

The SP hacked the computers in Dublin North and almost got Clare Daly elected.

And he said that Joe Higgins only got elected in the first place because of SP ballot-stuffing. My source was threatened into silence, so I can't give any more details.

Although my source in the counting centre would normally have stood up to the people in the SP who were trying to intimidate him, he was given pause by the fact that he recognised two of the heavies they sent around as undercover cops.

No member of the SP has ever stuffed ballots, interfered with the voting machines or engaged in any electoral fraud whatsoever. Even if you do not mean it it is a very serious thing to allege and I'd ask you to withdraw it.

This was in response to the SP accusations about the BB. Look in a fucking mirror. You have no proof about the BB but you feel you have the right to spread slander.

author by Daithipublication date Fri Jun 13, 2003 16:21author address author phone Report this post to the editors

For the umpteenth time, slander is verbal; libel is written/recorded/etc. Slander on this website is impossible, unless you come to a meeting and shout something...

And I don't recall satire being forbidden here or anywhere else, so perhaps it's neither slander nor libel, but the mysterious third category of 'humour'?

author by Finghin - SPpublication date Sat Jun 14, 2003 20:15author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Diathi, I understand the difference between slander and libel, sorry for my misuse of the terms but I don't think it too important to get caught up with debates about what word is correct and which is not.

I have no problem with satire often one can use exagerattions and humour in a good way to make political points. The posting alleging that the SP has engaged in electoral fraud and intimidate polling clerks can in no way be called satire. It is a blatent and serious lie and is libelous. It should be removed.

Durrutti, NO TIME did ANYONE in the SP say that all the BB were cops. It is untrue to say that they are. What was said was that there were some (handfulls in reality) police provacatours that mingled with the BB, this is acknowledged by most people including most anarchists. If i remember correctly WSM said as much at the time of Genoa. The SP DO NOT support the cops agaisnt the BB or agaisnt anyone on the left or in the workers movement. What we say is that those that use violence on the protests are mistaken in their tactics, we think that they alienate workers downply the roel of mass struggle and in effect allow the bourgeois press to discredit the movement.

i think that people should be carefull when quoting from the bourgeois press they will select what quotes they wish and disregard everything else.

Well why dont you tell us what else Matt Waine sid to the press?

How come Amnesty International condemned the behaviour of the cops at Evian but the SP rag the Voice said the State was restrained in the way they dealt with protesters.
