European Competitiveness Summit 2003

"From Rhetoric to to Action"
Dublin, Ireland, 20-21 October

Under the patronage of Erkki Liikanen, EU Commissioner, Enterprise and Information Society, European Commission, Brussels

In 2000, the EU adopted the Lisbon Strategy, a series of policies aimed at making Europe the "most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy in the world by 2010." While policy-makers continue to pledge their unconditional support of this goal, Europe seems to have gone off track.

The European Competitiveness Summit will serve as a timely update on the Lisbon goals. It will identify strategies and policies that will help Europe regain its economic momentum. Held under the auspices of the Irish government, the Summit will attract:

400 business leaders;
select heads of goverment;
ministers of finance, economy, industry, innovation and labour;
key media leaders;
academia and civil society representatives.

The conclusions and recommendations of the Summit will be fed into the Irish EU Presidency in the first half of 2004, in particular the March EU Summit of Heads of State and Government and the EU Competitiveness Council Meetings.

The Lisbon Review, in its second edition, will again serve as the intellectual backbone of the Summit. The review is an analytical ranking of the progress EU member states, as well as accession countries, have made with respect to the Lisbon strategy. The first edition can be downloaded at www.weforum.org/lisbonreview.

In addition, we will convene, under the umbrella of our Bridging Europe Initiative, a group of outstanding entrepreneurs from over 20 European countries. The European Commission has highlighted entrepreneurship as a key engine for economic growth and innovation. It will therefore feature prominently throughout the Summit programme.

As Ireland has grown at three times the EU average over the last seven years and is widely considered a role model for economic dynamism in Europe, Dublin is an ideal venue for the Summit.

Programme Highlights
Europe's Regulatory Environment: Manoeuvring through the Maze
Financial Services Action Plan: Key to Europe's Competitiveness?
Enlargement: What's Ahead for the World's Biggest Market?
Europe's Competitive Edge: Where will Future Growth Come From?
Transatlantic Business Relations: Withstanding the Storm?
Education: Upgrading Skills and Harnessing Talent
Facing Global Competition: How to Retain Investment in Europe
Fostering Entrepreneurship: Sharing Best Practices in Enterprise Policy
Creating Sustainable Employment Models
Centres of Excellence? Clustering Knowledge and Innovation
Universities and Venture Capital: An Alliance for Success?
An Action Plan for the Creation of a European Research Area
On Track? Industrial Policy for the 21st Century
Delivering the Goods: Completion of the Single Market

Co-Chairs
Richard S. Bobrow, Global Chief Executive Officer, Ernst & Young, United Kingdom
Peter D. Sutherland, Chairman, Goldman Sachs International, United Kingdom; Chairman, BP, United Kingdom

Points of View

"The EU has to shift from rhetoric to reform if the goal set in Lisbon is to remain within reach. There are gigantic gains to be made from completing the internal market and increasing competitiveness across the board."

Pat Cox, President of the European Parliament, Brussels

"Europe needs to foster entrepreneur-ship more effectively. New entrepreneurial initiatives, either starting a new firm or reorienting an existing one, boost productivity, efficiency and innovation. Entrepreneurship is relevant for firms in all sectors, technological or traditional, and for small and large firms."

Erkki Liikanen, Commissioner, Enterprise and Information Society, European Commission, Brussels

Co-Chair of the european competitiveness summit 2003:
Peter D. Sutherland, Chairman, Goldman Sachs International, United Kingdom; Chairman, BP, United Kingdom.

Sutherland is well known for his participation in the Bilderberg group, he is in fact on the international steering commitee

Bilderberg shares common goals with the Trilateral Commission, this includes a "Globalization summit" called for by Peter D. Sutherland, head of Goldman Sachs International. Sutherland attended the Bilderberg meeting in Scotland last May and is expected in Portugal (1999).
Sutherland is expected to again call for "Supranational institutions to manage the global economy while denouncing nations that "cling tenaciously to their separate identities" while calling for "sharing sovereignty"

In a related topic, there could be renewed calls for the UN to be able to directly tax all people.

Bilderberg meetings are held at irregular intervals, but have taken place once or twice a year since 1954. All the early conferences were held in Europe, but a meeting is now held on this side of the Atlantic every few years to provide a convenient opportunity for American, and Canadian participants to attend."

The Bilderberg membership is made up of Kings, Queens, Princes, Chancellors, Prime Ministers, Presidents, Ambassadors, Secretaries of State, Wall Street investors, international bankers, news media executives, and wealthy industrialist. Their meetings are by "invitation only", and no "outsiders" in the news media are allowed.

The Spotlight reports that the Bilderberg meetings are highly secret, and are held at random times each year, and rarely at the same location, for security reasons. The responsibility for security for these meetings is in the hands of the government of the country in which the meetings are held. They must supply military security, secret service, national and local police, and private security personnel to protect the privacy and safety of these very powerful international Elite members who are not required to conform to regulations that private citizens are subject-to, such as customs searches, visa requirements, or public notice of their meetings. When they meet, no "outsiders" are allowed in or near the building. They bring their own cooks, waiters, telephone operators, housekeepers, and bodyguards.

sorry Yossarian, i thought i had the name first? but its ok you can have it i wasnt too attached to it anyway.
Anyway have you any thoughts on the Bilderberger power brokers or has this turned into a Joseph Heller thread?

I don't have too many thoughts on the Builderburgers to be honest. It's appropriate that people should know that they exist and what their purpose / power is. But the best way to defeat them is to render them irrelevant by organising community assemblies who can, bit by bit, take the power back. OK, we may be far from that right now but we have do our best to create the conditions where that can occur.

(Regarding the handle, I thought you were taking the piss, 'cause I had only started using it a couple of days ago).

The bilderburgers vary in power.

Garret Fitzgerald scores pretty highly on special academic powers, but his speed @ 3km/hr is slow and brute strength is very low. (bench press 20kg-40 repititions) His displacement at 97kg is though reasonably light compared to some of the others and this implies a stamina value which is unsurprisingly 6/10!
(One US man weighs in at 150kg and I'd play him first coz he's as thick as shite in other departments and only got the Bilderburg job coz he broke someone's legs back in 1964).
Mary Robinson (another Bildeberuggger of Irish interest) scores middling on the allure, and quite high on vapid gestures.

Sorry, i know this thread started with an article about the WEF but i thought some might find the following of interest in regard to the broader issue of Who's really running the whole show..(or not as the case may be)
