Govt. Trade Policy Undermines Poor Countries

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday May 14, 2003 11:28author by Green Party Press Release Report this post to the editors

Greens Support Trade Justice Campaign for trade Rules which benefit poor

Speaking to members of the Trade Justice Campaign at their public lobby of the Dáil today, Eamon Ryan TD, said that the Green Party fully supported calls by the group of NGOs for a radical reassessment of the way the World Trade Organisation (WTO) works."

" Our government is helping to set the EU negotiation position for the WTO Cancun, Mexico summit in September. The Irish Government are among the most vocal defenders of EU export subsidies which undermines farming livelihoods in developing countries. At the same time our government is a strong advocate for the extention of WTO authority to new areas which will again make it difficult for poorer countries to develop their own economies."

The Government's position was outlined by the Tánaiste at Dáil question time last week when she said, "We are living in an environment where there will be an increasing liberalisation of trade from which the overall economy here will
benefit. It is something to which I strongly subscribe."

Mr. Ryan said that the main problem with this position is that while there are rigid rules to enforce the liberalisation of trade, there is no international authority to enforce the environmental and social regulations which could make such trade fair and sustainable.

The Green Party are calling on the Government to have a full debate on the issue in the Dáil. The decisions made in Mexico in Septemberr will have a crucial role, not only for the development of our own economy, but also on whether our
world develops in a just and sustainable manner.

Trade Justice Ireland Lobby Successful

One of the demands of the Trade Justice lobby today, that a Dáil debate take place ahead of the WTO talks in Septembet has been met.

One of the demands of the Trade Justice lobby today, that a Dáil debate take place ahead of the WTO talks in Septembet has been met.

Following a meeting of the Party Whips the Tanaiste agreed that there will be a debate on the WTO to take place probably in the second week of June.

I know Sinn Fein was arguing for this and presumably other parties were as well.

Justin, if it is indeed you

please try to add such short updates to previous stories on the topic in the newswire. I'm moving this one to become a comment on the Green Party press release.
Thanks.

R isible, if that is indeed your real name, I thought about putting it as a comment until I realised, as you should have done, that it is not a comment, but news in and of itself. My article, brief though it might be to merit the description does not refer to the Green party's opinions on the issue, laudable though they may be.

It is instead, new information not previously revealed and frankly, I think important enough to be given space as a published article and not appended as a comment to a party press release.

I think your decision was deeply flawed and would ask you to correct it.

It is on the same topic as the GP press release. It is an update to the demand for a Dail debate. Yes it is news, it is debatable as to whether it should be left on its own or not. I'm operating on the principle that posts commenting on the same issue should be moved into compact threads. I'm going to leave it here in the interests of making sure that the newswire is not unreasonably expanded with. I encourage you to appeal to [email protected] if you still feel that this is unfair. I will abide by any editorial collective decision.

Thanks.
