Irish bar forced to shut down in Kabul

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Friday April 25, 2003 22:22author by Seadna Report this post to the editors

An Irish pub in Afghanistan has been shut down, just weeks after it opened. The Irish Club in the capital Kabul was the country's only bar. It shut down after receiving warnings it could be the target of a terrorist attack. News of the threats were passed onto the owner by the US Embassy and the UN, which also banned its staff from visiting. A UN official said if someone were to bomb it, the entire international community could be wiped out in one night. The bar will remain shut for at least a week.

Serves em right. They should have some respect for other people's culture. Not too many Afghanis would be frequenting the bar I'm assuming anyway. There should be no objection to a church in Kabul or other religious freedoms if ya want. But it's another thing setting up an establishment that's only gonna cause troublemakers and a nuisance for those who live there and offend them while their at it. Unusual bit of news. Pointless really.

Good! Irish bar indeed. Bunch of drunks in a muslim country. What an image Ireland projects around the world.
It's time Ireland took a long hard look at it's drink problem. Why does Irish social life revolve around the pub so much? Why do we drink so much? Why do we need drink to be able to talk to each other? Why do we deny our drink problem? Why do we drink so much? What are we ashamed of?

Drink is holding this country back and stopping us fulfilling our potential as a nation. We could do so much more without it. I speak as one who enjoys his Guinness. Discuss.

amidst the poverty and stuff there are 3 Irish bars.
We broadcast from above one of these for one of the 3 BCN pirate stations.
I can not afford to drink in any of these pubs.
during the War we attempted to vox pop the people inside (often Brit weekend bingers).
We were kicked out of two.

I have no idea what these pubs are doing in that area. They are as bad as Mc Donalds, and indeed are found within puking distance of the "MC D".

I hate the Irish pub.
and i'm sure many others do too.

With no respect for minorities within those countries. And you condone terrorist threats to enforce this, to stamp out anything which doesn't fit in with the culture of the majority.

I've got your number all right.

Would you put a brothel in the Vatican City? I doubt it very much. But wait, what is that I hear you say prostitution is illegal. Well to the Afghanis alcohol is illegal! You people are just so caught up in your foolish love of alcohol that your senses have been permanently lost assuming that they were to be found in the first place. Did we 'liberate' Afghanistan only so that we could force upon them the worst elements of western culture?

Every single one? Even the Christians? The atheists?

Do you really want sharia imposed on everyone in Afghanistan? Because I find theocracy disgusting.

You know, democracy, freedom of choice and all that? Aren't the Americans in charge now? Surely they can protect a single pub?

do you mean they're not really in charge? no that can't be true, I saw it on television.

You're not suggesting that there are still some fundamentalists in Afghanistan? But they're all in Guantanamo bay, even the children, aren't they?
