Aaaah, sweet liberation.... So that was the war and this is victory? Come on, do ya really buy that? If only life were so simple. If only the war was the soap opera it appeared to be. If only human rights were so important and the facts so clear. So that was the war and this is victory? Come on, do ya really buy that? If only life were so simple. If only the war was the soap opera it appeared to be. If only human rights were so important and the facts so clear. You can easily get sick of hearing it but one simple fact remains: this war is mainly about oil. All the evidence points towards it – from the hijacking of the Florida election result by Bush’s oil troops (the Cheney, Rice, Powell, Rumsfield axis) to the speedy ‘liberation’ of Iraq’s oil fields, home to the 2nd biggest oil reserves in the world. It’s the same story in Colombia, Venezuela and Afghanistan. It is oil that fuels the western (yeah that’s us!) worlds economies, luxuries and commodities. It’s oil that provides your car petrol, that delivers your food to the shops, that heats your house, that fuels that plane to Spain, that helps manufacture those clothes, toys, electrical products and other ‘necessities’ we possess or have access to. Those who control the world’s oil supply control the world’s economy. In this increasingly globalised world this means that those who control the worlds economy, control the world. And that’s an urgent attraction for those that know that global oil supplies will disappear by 2020. But what if the good people rule the world? Isn’t it possible to have a good global dictator to enforce freedom, democracy and all things sacred? Just as the British raped, pillaged and butchered in Australia, India and Ireland (all in the name of civilisation you understand!) it’s now over to the good old U.S.A. But hey, it’s ok because ‘we can bomb our way to freedom’. And oh how they’ve tried! Over 50 countries they’ve bombed in 50 years and they even had the liberating generosity to use the ultimate weapon of mass destruction. Yeah that’s right, old Uncle Sam wanted to send the rest of us a democratic message (“don’t mess with us!”) and dropped atomic weapons on Nagasaki and Hiroshima in Japan, killing over ¼ of a million innocent people even when they knew WWII was won. Since then it’s been conquest after conquest with military bases now in over 120 countries. Viva democracy! But don’t get me wrong: I am not anti-American or anything. God forbid we criticise the country that was built by the sweat of millions of African slaves, that continues to wipe out the Native American people, those savage evil ‘Indians’ from Argentina and California to Hawaii, Alaska and Canada. How could we possibly say wrong against the world’s biggest manufacturer and supplier of weapons of mass destruction? How dare we comment on their racist death penalty or the fact that 40 million Americans live in daily poverty while many float around in the ignorant bliss that comes with the highest rate of illiteracy in the developed world? Perhaps I am just bitter at their economic successes achieved by having 2 million prisoners at work in Cheney’s private prisons or by strangling the ‘3rd world’ with illegal debts given to corrupt dictators from Africa to Egypt? Perhaps I am being too radical by saying George Bush stole the election (yeah, he lost by 1%) and is therefore unelected? Or maybe I am being paranoid by saying that the Whitehouse is under the control of fanatical business interests; the ones that are now hope to rebuild the country they destroyed with their ‘smart’ bombs and ‘smart’ sanctions. After all if those bloody Arabs would just be civil, give us their oil and buy our Coke, McDonalds and Nike then we wouldn’t have to bomb open the free market for western business. Perhaps it is ridiculous to condemn the Bush regime for failing to sign the Kyoto treaty, the UN convention on the rights of the child, the landmines treaty, and the anti-ballistic missile treaty? I suppose if I tried hard enough I could possibly get used to the idea of weapons in space, an end to clean water, genetically contaminated food, toxic air, frequent storms caused by global warming, paying for privatised education and health, buying into the myth of living in the free world. I suppose ignorance could be bliss but what would be the point? Of course we’ve got it good here in Ireland, well most of us do, but it’s time to do a reality check on our own bubble of blissful blindness. Yep that’s right it is a bubble, not a miracle, a boom or any other magical phenomenon that God blessed our suffering souls with. We bought the myth. We are buying it left right and centre and we are ignoring the vital ingredients of its poisonous recipe. Afraid so folks – the pie that mother cooked is fatal! We’d better spit it out quick. Yep, it’s no coincidence that the earth’s air, water and land are rotting away. It is no accident that ½ of all plants, forests and animals are under threat of extinction in the next 100 years. It is not by chance that scientists are predicting the great extinction of the human race. Sounds crazy eh! But that’s what the craziness of consumerism, of all our buying, acquiring and ‘must haves’ is causing. All those microchips, car parts, building materials, fast foods…everything…has come from the one source: earth! But we’re stripping it bare and we only have one. Not only are we stripping it bare, we in the white western world are keeping the booty for ourselves as the other two thirds get on with their struggle for food, housing, education and health. Yep – it ain’t no coincidence either that 1/3 of the planet is overfed and 1/3 malnourished. If we compare the earth to our house then we’re (most of us that is) pissing in our water supplies, pulling out the rafters, bashing at the foundations and telling the kids not to worry. Yeah, it’ll be all right in the end. Leave it with George’s script writers (whoever these mystery men are) and their cronies in Britain and Ireland to fix the problem. All we have to do is keep working, bump up that credit card, spend some more baby, have a holiday to ‘escape’, watch some TV to relax and they check out the products that advertisers say will make our lives easier, more relaxing, healthier and happier. Or we could take some time out. Go for a walk. Sit somewhere silent. Close our eyes. Breath. Expel the pressure, Or could we?

Freedom is fresh air and kids playing in the sun without even having to know what a land mine or depleted uranium is...
I want more people to rant, the way I ranted in THE ROAD TO BALLYSEEDY CROSS, posted to indymedia on 15 April. If more individuals rant with their own thoughts, that is the true news.
