Access to Indymedia Sites Blocked??? What's Going On?!?!

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Saturday February 16, 2002 22:15author by Lysander Zimmerman - IMC Hamiltonauthor email LAMZ at sympatico dot caReport this post to the editors

I can't access ANY Indymedia sites with addresses ending in ".indymedia.org"!! Any body else having this trouble??

I can't access ANY Indymedia sites with addresses ending in ".indymedia.org"!! Any body else having this trouble??

Anyone know why indymedia is not working? It's not working for me....even sites with their own servers (San Fran, LA, Victoria, Buffalo, etc.)! Philly, St Louis, Ireland, Finland, Netherlands, Norway, Adelaide, Israel , and Networking (Global Discussion) are the only ones that I can access out of the several with their own servers! This is highly unusual. I have never encountered this before. Any ideas????

Could this be the cause? Every site that ends with ".indymedia.org" cannot be accessed! All of the sites listed above are online since they do not have the ".indymedia.org" in their address! Observe:

Philly http://www.phillyimc.org
St Louis http://www.stlimc.org
Ireland http://www.indymedia.ie
Finland http://www.vaikuttava.net
Netherlands http://www.indymedia.nl
Norway http://www.indymedia.no
Adelaide http://www.adelaide.indymedia.org.au
Israel http://www.indymedia.org.il
Networking http://www.global.indymedia.org.au

It is as if there is something blocking access to any of the sites ending in ".indymedia.org"!!

No idea what the answer is though. I think I've experienced this before one time and eventually it all came back online so I don't think one needs to get too paranoid. First visit to this site - I'm an habituee of the UK wire. Nice neat front though. Will return.

We have to acknowledge the likelihood, that as the crackdown spreads, look at the Lofti Raessi case and the burning of Yarls Wood, the 'raisethe fist' site, the killing of William Cooper and the bust of Fritz Springmeier on fraudulent charges - the numerous long-term detentions without charge in the US, UK and other western countries - that the indymedia sites will come under actual attack. This blip in the service gives us a taste of what is to come. I'm sure that people in Ireland can surely recognise the portents from their own past and current history.

Sat 16 Feb 10 pm The main indymedia server in the US is down since 2 hours

That means most of the Indymedia sites and the mailing lists are inaccessible except this site and Indymedia Germany. We don't know why this has happened yet, and try to improvise something here in the UK. This means that no newswire is available for the time being.
In the meantime, please send your reports to the publicly archived reports mailing list

There are several indymedia sites with their own servers that also wouldn't work (victoria, vancouver, los angeles, etc.).

It was ".indymedia.org" that wasn't working...every other imc with a different address was working fine.

Unlike when stallman server itself goes down, the people upstream from us hosting
most of our colos decided at some kind of "last minute" to power down and move
every last bit of furniture around, including all the boxes. The main box to blame
for this handles the dns; which explains why even something on a server on the
moon, or planet x might fail dns for you, if it were http://yaddayadda.indymedia.org
anything at ...indymedia.org failed to give pages for the last hour or two.
We're currently trying to get consensus for awarding the people who did this a
gold medal in the new olympic sport of "furniture moving."
Just kidding about the last part, that was my idea entirely, no one laughed in
the tech meeting either.
The rest still stands.
