The Javaad Alipoor Company is a theatre company with a woke "nine-point manifesto that drives everything we do". Inevitably, the Arts Council is stuffing it with taxpayers' cash. Why do we fund this crap?

Tom Cooney and General Custer

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Tuesday April 15, 2003 11:33author by James McKennaauthor email jimmymac61 at hotmail dot com Report this post to the editors

What's the difference?

Last night on Questions and Answers Tom Cooney of UCD showed us his intellect and it wasn't a pretty sight.

Cooney: It (this war) wasn't pre-emotive in a pure sense because if you take it with resolution 1441 Saddam Hussein had an obligation to disarm immediately, fully and unconditionally, right...

John Bowman: Weapons that the Americans have not yet found?

Cooney: So, so?

Bowman: So, well if they don't find them...?

Cooney: So, are you saying they won't find them? Do you know that they won't find them?

Bowman: No, but do you know that they will?

(Loud audience applause)

Cooney: I have confidence that they will

Bowman: If they don't find them then was the whole adventure wrong?

(Here's the classic Cooney Slither as he dodges that question)

Cooney: There is a double-barell rationale for this war both morally and legally. One is resolution 1441. The US and Britain should have been able to go to the US Security Council and look for a second resolution. Before France even saw a draft of the second resolution it said it wouldn't vote for one.

Mitchell McLoughlin: Because it believed the arms inspectors were doind their job successfuly.

*****************************8

Eoin Harris also tripped on his own sword on RTE radio Sunday morning when he insistently and repeatedly claimed Richard Downes had justified the war and said it was just. Richard Downes was not long about calling the show and stating categorically that he had never said any such thing .

Harris mumbled something about looking at the tape of the Late Late Show again but didn't say sorry to Richard Downes.

How do the likes of these guys make it to be media pets? Is it a throw back to the 1980's when RTE ran self-censorship and Micthell McLoughlin woulnd't have been allowed to have a say and Cooney could have continued his flawed argument uninterrupted. Is it in any way part of the Irish peace process that people like these who have been most unhelpful at resolving the conflict but rather have driven it with their bigotry should be decomissioned from the airwaves?

I also saw Q&A and was struck by Cooney's reactionary and thugish behaviour.

Luckily Bowman was reasonably able for him, which cannot be said of other RTE presenters who have recently let him take over programmes.

I shiver at the thought that this guy is "educating" students at UCD, in the mould of Michael McDowell no doubt.

If anybody is interested complaints can be made online about this thug at:

I heard Eoin Harris on RTE radio on Sunday morning and the disgusting way he failingly talked about
the 'justification' for the war almost made me puke. It was very clear, he was there for propaganda
purposes on behalf of the USA.

I too couldn't believe that idiot Cooney on Q&A. As if his bullshit over the invasion of Iraq wasn't enough he then takes the Israeli s side and defends them killing a load of people in recent weeks by saying basically he can't blame them as they’ve been victim to so many suicide attacks.

His line about Palestine not being a state as if that proved his case that they were the terrorists and not the Israel "settlers" (AKA - Invaders) finally forced me to change the channel before I kicked the screen in.

...is that it is so thuggish and intimidatory that the ordinary joe wathing the telly or listening to the radio is automatically inclined to disagree with him. Thus the clapping in the Q&A studio. Cooney is a right-wing loud-mouth and makes no attempt to hide his condescension and arrogance. In my view, every time he opens his trap he is doing the anti-war movement a favour, because the average Irish citizen would be ashamed to say they agree with someone so utterly reprehensible and ignorant. The same arguement applies to George Bush Junior. His politics are virtually identical to those of Clinton, but charming Bill was loved (sort of) by the world, while Georgie the ignoramus is a source of ridicule.
