Haider in Dublin Thurs 10/4/03

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Thursday April 10, 2003 14:05author by von Report this post to the editors

Jorg Haider, the far-right Austrian politician and leader of the coalition 'Freedom Party', will take part in TCD Phil Soc debate tonight on future of Europe.

Jorg Haider has been active in Austrian politics for many years and is known for his extreme racist and anti-immigrant views. He has expressed admiration for Hitler's policies and been associated with several far-right individuals and groups, even defending the honour of Nazi SS troops in his speeches.

Following unprecedented success in the Austrian general elections in 1999 with 27 percent of the vote, the ironically-named Freedom Party (FP) formed a coalition with the christian-democratic People's Party (VP) in February 2000. Uproar ensued throughout Europe with several countries practically breaking off relations with their EU neighbour. This led Haider to 'step down' as party leader, returning to his home province of Carinthia to resume his career as governor there. However, he continued to exert a leading influence on the party in government.

In 2002 the FP brought down the coalition government following internal leadership wrangles - which eventually led to Haider regaining leadership of the party. The ensuing elections saw the FP's vote drastically reduced to less than 10 percent. The collapse is due to Austrian disillusionment with the party's failure to perform in government - and also to the fact that their coalition partners, the VP, have 'absorbed' some of their policies marketed them as their own.

However, the VP's post-election negotiations with other potential partners led nowhere and the coalition reformed, despite dissent in the VP. There are now calls for the VP to drop the Freedom Party infavour of analliance with the Greens.

Trinity College Philosophical Society has invited Mr Haider to debate on the issue of the future of Europe.

Jorg haider is not a Nazi. Jorg haider is entitled to freedom of expression. Students in TCD are entitled to freedom of assembly, free from intimidation. Societies in TCD are entltled to practice rights to free aseembly and free speech.
The anti nazi league seek to repress each of these rights.
So who are the NAZI's????

Sinn fein protested for years against article 31 of the broadcasting act which sought to deny them the airwaves. Now SF seek to censure others of a supposed opposing political persuasion.
Hyprocritical???
In truth sinn fein have no political philosophy, no balanced sense of history and have no reputable grass roots memebrship beyond the usual rent a mob who will seek to repress and intimidate tonight.

"Sinn fein protested for years against article 31 of the broadcasting act which sought to deny them the airwaves. Now SF seek to censure others of a supposed opposing political persuasion.
Hyprocritical???"

No, Haider is a Holocaust denier and admirer of Hitler and the Nazi regime.

"In truth sinn fein have no political philosophy,"

Ever hear of Democratic Socialism and Republicanism?

" no balanced sense of history "

You will have to explain further. Honestly, we dont believe that Ireland oppressed Britain for 800 years.

"and have no reputable grass roots memebrship beyond the usual rent a mob "

Now thats just plain silly, as even a fool like you should know.

"who will seek to repress and intimidate tonight."

Well, an eclectic group of Republicans and Socialists will gather tonight to refuse free sppech to a Fascist.

We the LAD's are in full agreement with you! We will be more than happy to help you suppress this clearly wrong demonstration to safegaurd Mr. Haider's freedom of speech! PS. anyone who doesn't agree with us will be designated a statist troll!

Personally, I'd say that Haider is not a Nazi, nor an imminent threat, nor is he going to organise anything in Ireland. So I'd say that for anti-fa's this meeting would be more useful as information gathering to see who turns up and where they're coming from, rather than disrupting the meeting. It's the typical right-winger in the Phil looking for attention meeting and I can't see what's to gain by breaking it up.

On the other hand, if Haider got a kicking, you won't find me weeping.

This guy is irrelevant and has been consigned to the political dustbin in Austria, where he should be left to rot with no media attention which he craves.

This bollocks is a media creation in much the same way as Bossi in Italy who is a figure of fun for 90%+ of the Italian population.

I agree with Chekov that this is some attention-seeking git's in TCDs handiwork (Haider is also one IMHO).

I also agree with Chekov that I wouldn't be at all displeased if the bastard got a good kicking and might even be tempted to join in myself.

The FPO have 10.2% of the vote in Austria and have three ministers in the government, one of them Haider's sister. Many political parties here would be well chuffed with 10%, even though it is down on the 27% the FPO got in 1999.

How can he be in the dustbin of history if 10% of the voting population (and a huge proportion of both working class and young people) vote for him? You ignore totally the ideological impact of the far right, it is not about individuals.

Chekov - nice to know you expect someone else to do the kicking for you but couldn't be arsed - politically or 'personally' - to do it yourself. Very positive that.

This is why Haider is himself irrelevant and his party increasingly so!

"In 2002 the FP brought down the coalition government following internal leadership wrangles - which eventually led to Haider regaining leadership of the party.

The ensuing elections saw the FP's vote drastically reduced to less than 10 percent.

The collapse is due to Austrian disillusionment with the party's failure to perform in government - and also to the fact that their coalition partners, the VP, have 'absorbed' some of their policies marketed them as their own."

What we really need to worry about is his policies being co-opted by mainstream parties, anxious to take votes from the far-right, as has happened with FF in Ireland.

Actually I said that I think it is pointless strategically to disrupt his meeting (I also have problems from a freedom of speech pov but I didn't mention them), although it wouldn't upset me on an emotional level if he did get a kicking. I don't expect anybody to do anything for me.

As a former Sinn Fein supporter, going back to my teenage years during the Hunger Strikes of 1980-81, and as someone who has voted for SF in just about every election I have had the opportunity, I am concerned with the direction the party is taking. In the same week as we have SF kissing up to the war monkeys I now read that they want to deny people a right to hear Haider !! Are they crazy ? All those years when we fumed about the denial of the people's right to hear the SF point of view. And now they're doing exactly what they condemned !
Several other SF supporters that I have spoken to have said that they will never again vote for the party--now that the national question has been put on a side-table SF really has nothing to offer that the Greens or Labour Party don't do better. SF are fooling themselves if they they think their vote will inexorably rise. It's just as likely that they will lose the support of those who were the foot soldiers during the cruel and hard years. We recently passed the anniversary of the day that Francis Hughes began refusing food in 1981. Would Francis Hughes had he lived support the present leadership ? I am pretty sure of the answer.

having been on the left all my life I find myself in a bit of a dilemma over the Haider visit. I do not agree with his Nazi supporting views but I am totally in agreement with him on his anti-immigration stance. If Ireland continues to allow thousands of bogus asylum seekers in we will eventually have our major towns and cities looking like Birmingham, Inner London, Bradford and Leicester. Muslim ghettoes! Every corner shop in the land will be taken over by Asians, the Albanians will run the drugs and prostitution rackets and Ireland will quite simply be unrecognisable in a few years time.
Scotland is presently going the way of England and will soon be followed by Ireland if we do not act now.
Listen to what Haider has to say!
