Greens Call for Return of Weapons Inspectors

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Thursday April 10, 2003 12:57author by Graham Caswell - Green Party Report this post to the editors

Press Release

The Green Party today called on the Government to insist on the return of weapons’ inspectors to Iraq and fair treatment of Iraqi prisoners of war. The Greens also backed the call by scientists in the UN for a study of the depleted uranium in Iraq.

Party Chairman and Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, John Gormley T.D., said these three demands were vital in the immediate aftermath of the war. “It’s clear now that Saddam Hussein and his Baath Party Regime are finished. However, this war was obstensibly about weapons of mass destruction and as of yet none have been found. One would have expected that if the Iraqis had been in possession of these weapons they would have been used in a last gasp effort.”

“It is essential, therefore, that the weapons’ inspectors now return to complete their tasks and to prove once and for all whether such weapons existed. If they did not exist then there would not have been any moral justification for this war. It would prove once and for all that this war was primarily about regime change to suit Anglo/American interests.”

“It is also essential that Iraqi prisoners are treated humanely and in accordance with the Geneva Convention. We cannot afford to see a repeat of the treatment of Afghan prisoners in Guantanamo Bay where there was at least 15 breaches of the Geneva Convention.”

“Finally, the Iraqi people have suffered terribly in the aftermath of the second Gulf war, where Americans used depleted uranium shells, which many Iraqi scientists and doctors believe have caused huge increases in cancers. It is time now that an in depth study was carried out to verify these claims. Such an objective study would also help to assist the many Gulf Veterans who also have been suffering from the effects of depleted uranium poisoning”, concluded Deputy Gormley.

Ihave to take issue with the notion that "there would not have been any moral justification for this war" if weapons of mass destruction are shown not to have been in the possession of the Iraqi regime. This war – any war fought by US/UK imperialism – is immoral. Their excuses for war make no difference – their motivation is ALWAYS the same: to advance their self-interest. Whether WMD are found in Iraq (and not confused with the ones the US/UK brought with them in case Baghdad proved a tougher nut to crack than they hoped) is irrelevant.

I think I could support the return of all UN groups to Iraq.
Iraq was and is to be properly discussed in the UN and only there.

I'm glad there is some movement with regard to studying the effects of DU on the country. This is a weapon, if not of mass destrustion, then of genetic destruction, and is as abhorrent as any nerve agent or virus. Its use must be stopped and the effects it has had on the peoples of Iraq, Afghanistan and the Balkans must be highlighted.
The use of depleted uranium is, quite simply, low level nuclear war.

seeing as there is no such thing as a safe level of exposure to radiation, it can just be called unconventional nuclear war.

Demanding the return of the inspectors???
Why, will saddam use WMD by telepathy or from beyond the grave?
What fucking planet are they on???

The Greens are calling for this, demanding that, protesting something else. These bleatings have no effect on anything whatsoever.

the readmission of the un inspectors would be a step in the right direction. If there are wmd in iraq, at least they could move about unhindered and find them if they are there, and if its the un looking for them, at least we could trust their findings to be true, its not beyond the realms of possibility that US inspectors could plant wmd in the country to justify their being there in the first place. you may consider the greens to be an impotent bunch of yahoos but there is a need for unbiased inspections even after the war. And as for the DU, that aspect is definitely worth pursuing.

Gerry Mulligan is so effective. Who needs The Green Party when we have Gerry around to get things done, call for things to be done, etc etc.
In fact just tell those Greenies to retire. Gerry will gladly take their salaries, pensions, and plush Dail offices. Good on ya Gerry.
