UCD SU President attacks College Activists![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() President Of UCD Students Union makes dusgusting remarks about the actions of activists in UCD at Mondays RTS event, which was attacked by Gardai In an article in todays Irish Independent, recently relected Aonghas Hourihane, a member of Fianna Fail made a number of scurilous remarks about activists in his college who are engaged in radical politics. 'Their antics were there for all to see. The Gardai just don't automatically take out their batons for any reason' he blamed the violence which erupted on 'agitators' among the protesters. He claimed the same individuals were involved in the recent violence in genoa and at other demonstarations. He claimed a number of the students involved directly werre members of the Socialist Workers Party. Speaking of the student involvement, he said that 'They would have been better off studying for their exams' At the time of the protest Hourihane was apparently waiting for a bus. In an interview with Pat Kenny the same president made a number of attacks on the demonstraters.

Jump To Comment: 1 2 3 4I cant believe these comments! have I missed something? This guy is the President Of UCD Students Union? Good luck UCD - you have an ill-informed and somewhat biased leader on your hands. I was there and was shocked at the response from the Gardai. I would condemn the use of the car earlier in the day as being pointless and stupid - but there wasnt any 'violence' from the protesters and certainly nothing to warrant the charge that ensued. Bystanders were hurt by Guards, and some protesters did end up in hospital - I can verify that.
Claiming that '...the Gardai just don't automatically take out their batons for any reason' proves that Mr. Hourihane is living in a fantasy world - it is nothing short of moronic ilk.
Are any of you seriously suprised by the comments of this individual. He's a member of Ogra Fianna Faill, ah the future is bright!
As a UCD student I pay Aengus Hourihane's wages. It was with absolute disbelief that I heard someone who is meant to work to defend and promote the interests of UCD students on national radio supporting the actions of police who attacked and assaulted UCD students.
Since when was it Aengus elected as president of the defend garda brutality association?
As a president of a students union Aengus has had a poor performance to date, but this is ridiculous.
Even had the gardaí actions been lawful which they clearly weren't Aengus would have been completely out of line to side with the gardaí against his members who behaved in a peaceful manner at all times.
Aengus has been on national radio as president of UCD students union twice that I am aware of. At neither time did he raise issues of genunine student concern such as housing problems, the grant, fees etc.
He also had the nerve to accuse others on national radio of using the protest and the violence on Monday to hijack the media. What on earth was he trying to do?
This guy will go far in FF.
He tried to put through a referendum in UCD to abolish the ents office, lost, and guess what, said the electorate were ignorant on the issue. So he just has to do it again.
He likes to shoot his mouth off on radio. He genuinly sees no contradiction in calling demo's himself to moblilse the UCD body populus on the grants issue, but attacks student protesters. Whats next, going into the bar on campus anr herding people to the library? That is the sort of blinkered thinking FF are crying out for.
Best of all, is is attitude towords women. If anyone read the Phoenix of two weeks ago they would know what I mean. He is (alledgedly) a 'hands on' sort of guy....
Aongus. You are a sad, pathetic wanker.
Should fit in perfectly.
