Reclaim the Protests

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday May 08, 2002 15:54author by Brian Durney - Anarchist Federation IrelandReport this post to the editors

RECLAIM THE PROTEST TOMORROW NITE FROM GR/SWP

Yes, GR/SWP may have called the protest against police brutality tomorrow night outside of Pearse Street Garda Station. And yes, perhaps they will use the event as some sort of opportunity to force Socialist Worker and "Join GR" material down people's throat. But, do we just stay away and ignore the fact that a part of the states forces attacked ordinary people having a peaceful protest in Dublin on a warm bank holiday monday.

No, we shouldnt, sure GR/SWP called the protest, this doesnt mean it has to be there's. In the spirit of the RTS demo that just passed we could reclaim the protest, outnumber the paper sellers, voice our concerns and show the pigs that when the batton comes down we're not all going to run away and hide.

Would it not be better to join the demonstration tomorrow and show the cops we're not afraid. that we wont stand for violence from the state. Lets show the cops who owns the streets, lets reclaim the protest from GR/SWP and show them up for what they really are, a mass consuming stalinist propaganda machine that eats up all the energy in this movement.

brian whats going on. Does indymedia have a competition for which of the platform anarchist groups can slag of the swp. This is just so sad. Has no one here heard of solidarity.

Ok. If we all go, I'll come.
But we must organize.
RECLAIM THE PROTEST!!!!

Do it some other way that can not be used by ANYONE to spin their agenda. Like a silent protest, or take it to the Dail instead.
Gardai follow orders, they are like an instrument and bringing a protest to their doorstep is calling for it!
Besides, legal advice is that we're winning in the moment and the press is as shocked at monday's events as we are.
Everybody take a deep breath and think before you act!
Thank you,
christian

The purpose of the Gardai attacks on monday was to scare people away from direct action protests back to relying on the system to somehow sort things out. While I agree (and it seems everyone does) that Thursdays protest should be peaceful it is VERY important that we send the message that we will not be dictated to by Gardai thuggishness. We need everyone outside Pearse st station at 18.00 on Thursday.

If you're worried about how the protest will be perceived, bring placards, leaflets, signs, and pictures, so that you're getting across your own message, not someone else's. If you don't turn up at all, how will your voice be heard?

Paul, unfortunatly the vast bulk of the people who slag of the S.W.P. (or commit the crime of throwing some justified criticisms there way)are not members of any anarchist group. Claiming so is just a tactic to reduce the inumerable criticisms of the S.W.P., - which are usually most forcefully expressed by people not in anarchist groups (most of us have got over the S.W.P. by this stage and are no longer outraged by their antics), to sectarianism or to anarchists versus the S.W.P.
Face facts the S.W.P. has alienated innumerable amounts of people of varying shade of opinion.
I have only noticed a couple of members of anarchist organisations posting on this issue - and they have all said the same thing: turn up to tommorow's protest.

Ye might try and reassure yourselves by pretending this is some anti-S.W.P. anarchist campaign, but the fact is most people around activism for a while get well sick of yir authoritarianism, opportunism, evangecal recruiting and assorted tom foolery. Especially yir former members.

I agree. We cannot let groups like the SWP constantly take advantage of peoples discontent so as to further their own agenda, and we similarly cannot let the pigs get away with scaring us all into submission. Go to the protest and tell the SWP, etc, to go the fuck home and come back when they're willing to do so without their papers, flags, membership cards, and pathetic agenda.

Who cares who comes to yhe protest or what their beliefs. The gardai are the problem - fascist tactics, indiscriminate violence, corruption and generally acting like they own the country. We should all turn up to show these scum they wont get away with this shit anymore.Stop bitching among ourselves.

Here we go again. It's not ourselves, it's us and them.
