USS= Union that Sells out Students

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Saturday March 15, 2003 21:18author by Arthur Phillip Report this post to the editors

After a week of Anti-War walkouts accross the country the Union of Secondary Students dont support walkouts

"An important policy the USS has is that we do not support student walk-outs as protests." (from USS website)

The USS is completely out-of-touch with its members. The recent walkouts from schools over the war in Iraq has shown the USS up as a bunch of idiots. They are conservative careerist types. The USS is very undemocratic. Only about 5 schools are actually affiliated, and even from those schools delegates are not elected!

The USI support this organisation without any criticism of its lack of strategy on building a membership. The National Youth Council are fully supportive of this organisation. As are the Government who give them funding!

my brother went along to one of their meetings (what was supposed to be the AGM) in 2001, and he said "usless bunch of fuckers" (his words not mine). My brother is the not the most political person in the world, but he seemed to get pretty riled about this group's 'leaders'. Said they wouldn't come out against the Afghan War, wanted to take money off the government (which it appears they have), their website was to have a corporate sponsor and that they refused to tackle the then Minister for Education on the teachers issue when he was coming to some meeting or other. Also, appearently this AGM consisted of only 10 or so people. I doubt things have improved. and it doesn't surprise me that they oppose walkouts, sure don't they have their leaving certs, CVs and Trinity places to be worrying about.

May I make a suggestion - given the recent upsurge in school student activity (YAW, SSAW), could these mobilisations not be used as a platform for advocating a new School Students Union, or for a takeover of the existing one by militants in an organised fashion, getting rid of these ineffectual careerists?

Sounds like a plan to me...
