5,000 plus in Cork Anti-War Rally (Photos)

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Saturday March 08, 2003 17:31author by Sean Report this post to the editors

High winds, rain fails to deter crowds

More than 5,000 people (garda estimate, it was probably more) marched through Cork city centre today (Saturday) in an anti-war rally organised by the Cork Anti-War Campaign.

Following the demonstration a rally was held at Emmet Place where after addresses by several speakers a free music session was provided by local musicians including Meteor award winner John Spillane, Hank Wedel & Open Kitchen and Eoin Coughlan.

70 lawyers have publicly stated that it is a criminal act for Ahern and Harney to allow Shannon to be used for the transport of U.S. troops on their way to mass murder in Iraq. Is any legal action being taken to stop these criminals? And if not, why not?

What are YOU doing about it, Shelta? And what the hell has it got to do with the photos of the Cork protest? And why don't you get up off your arse and quit your virtual bellyaching?

Thats right I can just sit here and demand that somebody else sorts this out!

listen, there is no need to be rude to someone who has a legitimate suggestion. What Shelta said, if you were listening, did give you some information. So she WAS doing something you ignorant pile of crap. She is probably not a legal expert, dare i say you aren't either, but looking at the comments posted hers is the only one that offers up any suggestions at ALL. So go pound sand.

Well you fecking ejitt for starts there is a legal campaign, and yknow what I found out about it, by using my brain (yknow that heavy thing in your skull you rarly use), and looking around instead of petuantly stamping my foot in cyberspace and demanding somebody fix something.

Go pound sand....did your mamma give you that or did you figure it out by your self.

The middle-class stalinists who now control the Labour Party played a key role in the censorhip of Irish republicanism on Irish govt. media. Judging by some of the above posts that repressive, censorious mentality still infects some minds. We don't need Big Brother on Indymedia. Nor do we need Uncle Joe and his suppo rters.

Good turnout in Cork a few politicians spoke. Upstaged by excellent speech from Kurdish comrade Latiff and direct action activist Mary Kelly the only person to mention those before the Courts.

The bands were really good. The question is what next another march around Cork? petitions? Candle lit vigils?

Its time to target Shannon again.

James starts his comment by remarking that it was a good demo, but then quickly adds 'what next, another march around Cork?'. Maybe I'm wrong but that seems like a sneer at marches that aren't held in Shannon.

Also, what's with comment on 'vigils' and 'petitions'? If you really support diversity of tactics then that should include tactics that you wouldn't necessarily prioritise yourself! More to the point, the sun doesn't actually shine out of Shannon's arse - if we can get larger numbers on the streets of Cork (than we could get at Shannon) then we should go for it.

Most activists in the anti-war movement are in favour of protesting at Shannon, but it aint everything.

"a sneer at marches that aren't held in Shannon."

How you can think that the phrase 'what next, another march around cork?' is a sneer escapes me. It's an obvious question and you can hardly argue with the accuracy of the description of the event in Cork. If it 'a march around cork' is a sneer, what do you suggest as an accurate description of the event?

Between the politicians there was some great music from Hank Wedel & Open Kitchen, John Spillane and Eoin Coughlan. Well done lads!

Usual hypocrisy from Labour (2 of them!) and Green politicians who were so quick to condemn last week at Shannon, but Mary Kelly and the Kurdish speaker were superb. Crowd was great too, despite strong winds and rain.

Chekov, you should try reading James comment again. It's obvious what he's getting at. To me anyway as a humble outsider, it's a put-down of marches in places other than Shannon airport.
