I dont drink but If I want to drink on the street I will , nobody has the right to dictate my natural habits who do you think you are? Not being a car owner I live in possibly one of the most congested streets in this country you dont hear me complaining but I will say the worst part of living here is the noise of the cop cars and firebrigades and ambulances which every minuite of every day and night and and yet you will condone this even though it is illegal for you to blow the horn on your car or make any noise in your own home after 10pm. Get a life and wake up.

ok ok, maybe some guards over reacted, but lets look at it from both sides. 1. drinking on the streets, this is against the law and the guards have every right to arrest an individual who commits this crime. 2. they were far outnumbered by protestors and have an equal right to defend themselves. 3. a smoke bomb went off in a car, once again a crime (which was obviously planned seen as theres a picture of someone with a gas mask on). 4. if you resist arrest or help someone do so then you are commiting another crime, what do you expect guards to do? let everyone go because they dont want to be arrested?
ok, on to the protest: 1. who are you reclaiming the streets for? the majority of people in the city drove there, including all those who used public transport. 2. who paid for the roads? private motorists that pay insurance and MOTOR TAX. Will you be happy to pay bicycle tax? 3. how could you be there? again the majority of people have jobs that pay taxes which in turn supplies funds for social walfare (im not stating that all protestors are unemployed). 5. we knock hundreds of people down every year? maybe if you respected the rules of the road and waited for a safe crossing instead of walking blindly out in front of moving traffic this wouldnt happen. let me make this clearer, roads were built for vehicles not pedestrians, if you see me drive on a path then you can complain.
and finally, im not saying all guards are perfect, there not. but there doing the best they can in a hard job and the vast majority do it well. I agree with freedom of speech and peoples rights to protest, I accepted some inconvenience while the protest was going on but I wasnt going home to watch telly all night, I was going home to be with my family and maybe on that occasion I went out with some friends. What do you consider an acceptable way of using my free time?

Why is it thhat I get the impression that most of the people responding to this are people who were on the protest.
One individual states there was no overt agression towards the Gardai and a smoke bomb is apparently ok.
However someone broke the rear window of the vehicle and then decided to place what is called a smoke Bomb however it looks like a flare to me in the vehicle and this is apparently OK !!!!!

Was it this persons vehicle I think not. Well done the GARDAI

Your assumption that all of us sad ordinary souls without an opinion on anything have only the television to rot in front when we go home shows that you are the one with the narrow minded myopic views. Who the hell are you to judge the VAST majority of the people of this country in this way. Go get a life or better still a job and start to contribute to the society that is obviously keeping you alive - or is it Daddies D4 bank account!

On a lighter note - They invented clean fuel and catalytic converters to counter the
noxious fumes from cars, hopefully soon there will emerge something to counter the bad personal hygiene smeels from you yetties

anyone who thinks that any gardaí will be held responsible for their violent thugery is delusional.

anyone who thinks that voting changes anything is deeply delusional, though you may continue participating in your meaningless games if it keeps you amused.

people were having fun and the fucking cops decided to hospitalise as many of them as they could manage...people are not ok with this and for good reason.

there have been alegations that people in the crowd were drinking, so what? drinking is a culturally acceptable pastime and with the absence of violent behaviour this could not possibly legitamise the gardas violent response to the protest.

it is also true that we blocked the road...but since this was the point of the exercise i hardly consider this either a fault or an act of treason necessitating the unofficial declaration of martial law with cops using battons on peaceful citizens and military police jeeps circling the city centre.

to the allegation that we annoyed the average cunt-in-their-car i respond thus:

we may have delayed you but we didn't put any of you in hospital like the people assaulted by the cops, we may have delayed you but we don't poison the air you breathe, we may have delayed you but we don't run hundreds of you over every year, we may have delayed you but we don't support the dictatorships in every country from burma to israel to indonesia that are perpetuated because of the oil you burn, we may have delayed you but you were only going home to rot your brain on front of your widescreen TV and we had something more productive to do.

Guys - I think you should just let it drop - the gardai are trying to do their job - you held up the streets for 5 hours - restricting ordinary people from getting about... Who are you reclaiming the streets for? Is it just yourselves? In my opinion you caused more harm than good - a pack of tossers...

And the photos on
http://struggle.ws/wsm/news/2002/rtsMAY.html
does that guy write for the sun - I dont see much agression - I see a car with a smoke bomb in it on a public street.

Has anyone noticed? Decades ago if you had a streak of violence (or worse) in you that you wanted to express legitimately, what organisation did you join...? The clergy. Now where do the sick, bullying, bloodthirsty, twisted people go? The guards. Down with the guards as thay are, I hope (although I don't hold out much hope) that all you that hurt peaceful protestors are brought to justice...it will come to you eventually.

When you vote on May 17th remember that lack of Garda accountability has been overseen by a Fianna Fail administration. If you really want to make a difference then use your vote on May 17th and in the words of Ruairi Quinn "get the bastards out"...
