Major anti-war rally in Cork this Saturday

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Tuesday March 04, 2003 16:22author by Sean O Seafraidh - Cork Anti-War Campaignauthor email corkantiwar at hotmail dot comauthor phone 086-3004573 Report this post to the editors

Cork Anti-War Campaign to hold rally followed by music event.

A major anti-war rally will be held in Cork City Centre this Saturday (8th March) which hopes to attract several thousand people.

The rally is being organised by the broad-based Cork Anti-War Campaign and after marching through the city centre will make its way to Emmet Place where a live music gig will be held after short speeches from anti-war activists, TDs Joe Higgins and Dan Boyle and trade unionists.

The event will coincide with International Womens’ Day and the rally will be led off by a group of women dressed in black to highlight the effect of war on women and children.

The Cork Anti-War Campaign said that the rally was being held at a critical time as preparations for a US led war on Iraq have been stepped up to the point where special military operations and actual shooting have already started, despite the fact that UN weapons inspectors have yet to finish their task.

The demonstration will commence at Daunt’s Square at 1.00pm and will follow a route from culminating in Emmet Place where the musical line-up includes John Spillane, Hank Wedel, Eoin Coughlan and Head Over Heels.

A spokesman for the Cork Anti-War Campaign said that several thousand Cork people had travelled to Dublin for the huge rally in the capital on February 15th and there was no reason why there couldn’t be a very large turnout for a similar rally in Cork. “We are calling on the people of Cork who are overwhelmingly opposed to a war for oil against Iraq and who are totally opposed to US military refuelling at Shannon, to come out in their thousands next Saturday and make their voices heard”.

Why have the Sinn Fein and Labour Party elected reps not been invited to speak at the event

Is it to be a really broad based demo?

Can the CAWC guarantee that Sinn Fein and the Labour party will actually put even one of the 2500 posters advertising the event or give out even one of the 20,000 leaflets?

That's why they (Labour Party and Sinn Fein) weren't invited. Plus their opposition to war is very suspect if the US/UK do manage to threaten/bully/bribe the UN Security Council into supporting a 2nd UN resolution against the people of Iraq.

Right now in Belfast Sinn Fein is begging Bush's poodle to be allowed administer British rule in Ireland. Clearly they cannot be anti-imperialist when they are implementing imperialist policies in Ireland. As for Labour, the Stalinist leadership is on record as being only against 'uniltateral' action by the U.S. Which is nonsense as the U.S. is not going it alone. It has Britain, Australia and many others on its side. Presumably if the U.N. resolution passes the impending mass murder then becomes moral and legitimate.

Baath party flags? I've never seen one in Cork, so it's hardly an issue. Moreover, I have yet to meet an anti-war activist who supports either the Baath Party or Saddam Hussein's vicious dictatorship.

I don't know whether individual members of SF or the Labour Party have distributed leaflets or stuck up posters, but I do know that both parties support the Cork Anti-War Campaign. Indeed, Ciaran Lynch (Labour Party) and Cllr Jonathan O'Brien (Sinn Fein) spoke at a CAWC-organised meeting in Ballyphehane tonight, at which a local group was formed.

There is no question of either of these parties not being invited to speak at Saturday's demo. We decided to limit the number of speakers to five and no member of the LP or SF suggested a speaker from their organisations. Dan Boyle TD and Joe Higgins TD will be among the speakers, but the truth is that most of the after-march event will centre on music and so on. John Spillane is one of those scheduled to play. Speakers will be on for roughly five minutes each.

What do they look like?

The current Iraqi Flag is a Baath Party Flag adopted after their bloody ascent to power in 1968. I can almost garuntee you will see them on the streets of cork this weekend.

Andrew,
Please share your intelligence information which you are using to suggest that Baath party flags will be in evidence. Do you posess such a flag? Do your friends? Do you otherwise know of people who are planning to bring such flags? What type of flag should people bring to indicate support for the Iraqi people?
If you want to deter people from attending, let us hear some real reasons. Otherwise stop trolling.

I will be there with my camera to take pictures of joe higgins and dan boyle and anyone else in proximity to Iraqi Flags. . You know the same flag under which Saddam invaded Iran and Gassed Halalhaba.

Hey other andrew I haven't seen an Iraqi flag on one of the protests in Ireland yet so you'll probably get a bit bored. Can you source this claim that the flag is the same as the Ba'ath party though - Syria is also ruled by a Ba'ath party yet has a different flag.

Senator Brendan Ryan (Labour Party) will also be among the speakers on Saturday in Cork.

Nut Case???
Andrew id prefer a measured response than a slur.
Ask cork socialist youth if there were iraqi flags dispalyed at previous marches in cork. When I asked they reponded that these banners belonged to members of the public over which they had no control. I wonder if i would have remained unmolested if I had waved the stars and stripes?
A picture will paint a thousand words and expose a thousand hyprocrytes.
