Diversity kitsch is all around us. But as the grim fact forcefully confronts us that some immigrants hate their hosts so much they want to murder and rape them, David McGrogan senses that it is at last falling from favour.

Globalise Resistance rallies for Mayday against Le Pen

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Thursday May 02, 2002 16:11author by Joe Carolan - Globalise Resistanceauthor email globalise_resistance at yahoo dot comauthor phone 087 9032281 Report this post to the editors

Rain was hard but spirits high

About a hundred and fifty people joined the Globalise Resistance rally against Le Pen and the rise of European fascism yesterday at the GPO, braving a terrible downpour to take the spirit of France's anti Le Pen mobilisations to the streets of Dublin.

"Chasson les nazis- bienvenue aux immigres" and "Les blancs, les noirs, la lutte ensemble!" echoed between the pillars of the GPO as numbers gathered. "Le Pen, Le Pen, No Pasaran!" went the call from a group of Spanish students, and then the Irish joined in with @Black and White- Unite and Fight- Smash te Nazis, Smash the Right!" Every language in Europe seemed to be represented, with people from Greece, Italy, Malaysia and Germany also raising anti fascist chants in their own languages, to a mixed degree of response from the mostly Irish/French crowd.

The manifestation rallied at the O Connell Statue, before joining in with the Trade Union run Mayday march. It could be said that the GR contingent brought whatever passion and energy that coulb be found on yesterday's march, which apart from the Anti Bin Tax campaigns and the far left, seemed to be made up of a collection of trade union bureaucrats who had done very little to mobilise numbers or inject colour or politics into the day.

Anti le Pen chants were now joined by Anti capitalist slogans from Genoa and France, "Tous ensemble!", "So, so, so solidarite!" and "Oh, anti, anti capitalista!" echoing through O Connell street. Many joined in with "One solution, revolution". As the rain poured down, the bureaucrats got a rendition of "Well you're all very quiet up the front!" which transformed into "And we all hate the National front!"

Bandeira Rossa, the Internationale, Bella Chao and anti fascist songs from the French resistance were all sung as the demo made itys way to Liberty hall, where the energy the anti capitalist contingent had built up was now in direct contrast to the top down approach of the bureaucrats and their long and worthy speeches. Many there could not stomach that one of Ireland's more left wing trade union leaders had been sacked the day before, and was nowhere to be seen up on the stage. Cheers of support for Mick O Reilly of the ATGWU went up, and bureaucrats who had engineered his sacking with Tony Blair, Bertie Ahern and Bill Morris were given the heckling they deserved.

The gap between the anti capitalist contingent and the bureaucrats was wide and plain to see, and Des Gegarty of SIPTU likened the hecklers to the Red Brigades and Le Pen's fascists. This brought a lot of derision from the crowd, who didn't take too kindly to their defense of Mick O Reilly being linked to terrorism or fascism. Ritchie Brown of the Campaign against the Bin Charges, at the end of his speech, expressed his utter disgust at those trade union bureacrats in the ICTU who had helped stitch O Reilly up, which got the biggest cheer of the day from the crowd.

GR will next be taking to the streets on May 6th, for the Reclaim the Streets party at the GPO. The Bush monster will go up in flames!

Debout ! les damnés de la terre
Debout ! les forçats de la faim
La raison tonne en son cratère :
C’est l’éruption de la fin
Du passé faisons table rase
Foule esclave, debout ! debout !
Le monde va changer de base :
Nous ne sommes rien, soyons tout !

Refrain
C’est la lutte finale
Groupons nous et demain
L’Internationale
Sera le genre humain.
Il n’est pas de sauveurs suprêmes :
Ni dieu, ni césar, ni tribun,
Producteurs, sauvons-nous nous-mêmes !
Décrétons le salut commun !
Pour que le voleur rende gorge,
Pour tirer l’esprit du cachot
Soufflons nous-mêmes notre forge,
Battons le fer quand il est chaud !

L’Etat opprime et la loi triche ;
L’Impôt saigne le malheureux ;
Nul devoir ne s’impose au riche ;
L’égalité veut d’autres lois ;
« Pas de droits sans devoirs, dit-elle,
« Egaux, pas de devoirs sans droits ! »

Le grand parti des travailleurs ;
La terre n’appartient qu’aux hommes,
Le riche ira loger ailleurs.
Combien de nos chairs se repaissent !
Mais si les corbeaux, les vautours,
Un de ces matins disparaissent,
Le soleil brillera toujours !

Arise ye workers from your slumbers
Arise ye prisoners of want
For reason in revolt now thunders
And at last ends the age of cant.
Away with all your superstitions
Servile masses arise, arise
We'll change henceforth the old tradition
And spurn the dust to win the prize.

Refrain
So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale unites the human race.
So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale unites the human race.
No more deluded by reaction
On tyrants only we'll make war
The soldiers too will take strike action
They'll break ranks and fight no more
And if those cannibals keep trying
To sacrifice us to their pride
They soon shall hear the bullets flying
We'll shoot the generals on our own side.

No saviour from on high delivers
No faith have we in prince or peer
Our own right hand the chains must shiver
Chains of hatred, greed and fear
E'er the thieves will out with their booty
And give to all a happier lot.
Each at the forge must do their duty
And we'll strike while the iron is hot.

Unmundigt nennt man uns Knechte,
duldet die Schmach laenger nicht!

Gewoelbe, stak und fest bewehret
die bergen, was man dir entzog.
Dort lieft das Gut, das dir gehoeret
und um das man dich betrog.
Ausgebeutet bist du worden!
ausgesogen bis aufs Mark!
Auf Erden rings, in Sued und Norden,
das Recht is schwach, die Willkuer stark!

In Stadt und Land, ihr Arbeitsleute,
wir sind die staerkste Partei'n
Die Muessiggaenger schiebt beiseite!
Diese Welt muss unser sein!
Unser Blut sei nicht mehr der Raben
und der maechtigen Geier Frass!
Erst wenn wir sie vertrieben haben
dann scheint die Sonn' ohn' Unterlass!

Abscheulich blaehn sich diese Goetzen,
die Herrn von Schacht und Eisenbahn.
Sie machten unser Blut zu Schaetzen,
sie haven unser Gut vertan.
In Stahltresoren liegt's vergraben.
Wann machen wir die Rechnung glatt?
Das Volk will ja nur wiederhaben,
was man dem Volk gestohlen hat.

Die Herrscher machten uns betrunken.
Der Zauber muss zu Ende sein.
Drum werft ins Heer der Freiheit Funken!
Dann schlaeft es mit dem Kolben drein.
Wenn sie uns zwingen, die Barbaren,
Soldat zu spielen noch einmal,
wir werden unsre Kugeln sparen
fuer unsren eignen General.

Compagni avanti, il gran partito
Noi siamo dei lavorator’
Rosso un fiore in petto ci è fiorito,
Una fede ci è nata in cuor’.
Noi non siamo più nell’officina
Entro terra nei campi in mar
La plebe sempre all’opra china
Senza ideali in cui sperar.

Su lottiamo, l’ideale
Nostro fine sarà
L’Internazionale
Future umanità !
Un gran stendardo al sol fiammante
Dinanzi a noi, glorioso va !
Noi vogliamo per esso siamo infranti
Le catene alla libertà.

Che giustizia afin venga vogliamo
Non più servi, non più signor’ !
Fratelli tutti esser’ dobbiamo

All’uomo darà pac’ e amor’.

Avanti, avanti, la vittoria
È nostra, e nostro è l’avvenir’ !
Più civile e giusta la storia
Un’altra era sta per aprir’.
Largo a noi ! All’alta battaglia
Noi corriamo per l’ideal’
Via largo ! Noi siamo la canaglia
Che lotta per il suo Germinal !

Here's a translation of the song the French comrades were singing on the GR Mayday contingent.
With thanks to Cecile and Leyla.

Ami, entends-tu le vol noir des corbeaux sur les plaines?/ Friend, can you hear the crows' black flight over the plains?

/Friend, can you hear the deaf sound of the country that is being chained?

Ohe, partisans, ouvriers et paysans, c'est l'alarme /Ohey, partisans, workers and countrymen, this is the alarm

/We are the ones who break the bars of the jails for our brothers

La haine a nos trousses, la faim qui nous pousse a la misere/Hatred, hot on our heels and hunger that drives us into misery

Il est des pays ou les gens au creux des lits font des reves /There are some countries where people in bed have that dream:

Chantez, compagnons, dans la nuit la liberte vous ecoute /Sing, companions, at night, freedom is listening to you

Ami, si tu tombes un ami sort de l'ombre a ta place /Friend, if you fall down, another friend will come and fight in your name

Here, every one does what he wants when he passes by

Chorus:

Motives, Motives! Il faut rester motives! Motivated, Motivated, we have to stay motivated!

Motives, motives! Il faut se motiver Motivated, motivated, one must motivate

Highly paid bureaucrats like Des Geraghty are enemies of the working class and should be confronted and challenged at every opportunity.
