Globalise Resistance-EVACUATION DRILL OF DUBLIN!

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday February 06, 2002 21:58author by Joe Carolan - Globalise Resistanceauthor email globalise_resistance at yahoo dot comauthor address The Other World which is Possible!author phone 087 9032281Report this post to the editors

What happens when Sellafield melts down, Mr Jacob?

Prop making, costume making, theatrical rehearsal in NCAD- 6pm Friday Feb 15th Meltdown, evacuation drill and Die IN in front of minister's office- 3pm March 2nd

The Globalise Resistance meeting last night in Dublin brought together lots of ideas for building theanti-globalisation movement in Ireland. The main theme was a discussion on
nuclearpower/weapons and particularly the threat thatthe Sellafield Nuclear power plant poses for peopleand the environment here.
There will be a protest at Sellafield by anti-nuclear activists on February 14th so anyone interested in traveling over is to contact Edel on 086 3580477. Itwill cost 35 euros and busses are leaving from Limerick, Galway and Dublin on Wednesday Feb.13th and returning Friday Feb. 15th.

The main thing we discussed however was plans for an anti-nuclear protest in Dublin when people get backfrom Sellafield.
The plan is to run a "nuclear meltdown drill".
We will assemble at 3pm at the Central Bank where
speakers will explain the threat of Sellafield and
then at a co-ordinated moment "nuclear wardens" in
overalls and masks will come into the crowd with
sirens and horns in a trial-run nuclear meltdown
scenario – everyone will have half an hour to escape!

Everyone on the demo will be given emergency plans
which will tell you what to do in the event of a
nuclear fall out from Sellafield:
Get to the Fianna Fail headquarters within half an
hour and protest (or after half an hour has passed, have a die in…?)
Wardens will get everyone running to mount streetraising the alarm on the way.
Lots of other details to be worked out but that's theidea…

We will challenge Joe Jacob through the media
beforehand to be there at the drill with hisalternative emergency plan!
Also, we plan to put outlines of dead bodies all over the streets of Dublin the night before the protest to show the scale of the carnage that would happen.
We had provisionally decided to have the demo on Feb 23rd but it's been suggested now that we put it back to March 2nd to give everyone who's going to sellafield/faslane next week, time to get involved andorganise it all properly.
So the plan is... meet in NCAD(national college art and design) , Thomas St. on the concourse (just inside main gate to the right) on Friday February 15th from 6pm on, to co-ordinate the
action and do trial run rehearsal, make costumes,
banners etc. and start advertising for it.
Bring any props or materials you think would help.
Any other ideas or suggestions use the forum fordiscussion on our website http://globaliseresistance.cjb.net.

We also agreed action for May Day this year and to
mobilize for the EU summit in Spain this Summer.
We also discussed starting campaign to target Irish Multinationals involved in exploitation of workers inthe developing world –
Smurfit, Fyffes etc.Agreed to come back to these
issues at next months meeting – first
8pm Tuesday 5th of March in Doyles bar college green.
