Dundrum anti-war meeting

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Thursday January 30, 2003 19:24author by Brian Cahill - Socialist Partyauthor email nigel_irritable at yahoo dot com Report this post to the editors

A very brief report from last night's Irish Anti-War Movement public meeting in Dundrum.

33 People attended a productive IAWM meeting in Dom Marmion House, Dundrum.

The platform speakers were Green and Sinn Fein TDs and representatives from Labour and the SWP. They each outlined their opposition to the war and their conviction that this will be a war about oil. Mary Kelly's recent actions were applauded.

The main point of disagreement on the platform was about the United Nations, with Labour in particular stressing the international law aspects of the case against war.

About 10 people spoke from the floor. I raised the importance of trade union action against the war using the Scottish train drivers refusal to move munitions as an example.

The meeting made a number of decisions:

1) To mobilise for the 15 February demonstration.

2) Some people will be writing letters of protest to their TDs, particularly Seamas Brennan.

3) There will be an attempt to set up a functioning local anti-war group. The first meeting has been tentatively scheduled for 8:00pm in the DFRC on Monday 8 February. If the time, date or place changes I will post the new details on indymedia.
