Irish protest military use of Shannon airport

Nicola Byrne
Sunday January 19, 2003
The Observer

Almost 2,000 protesters gathered at Shannon airport yesterday afternoon to object to the US military using the facility to transport arms.
As revealed in last week's Observer, American weapons are being brought through the airport in preparation for war with Iraq. The Green Party has renewed its appeal for Gardai to be allowed to inspect military and chartered civilian aircraft ferrying troops to the Gulf.

"There's been too much capital invested in this war for it not to happen. But we're making our position clear, we're saying 'no'. There are people speaking out on this all over the world now, and we're part of it," said Adam Conway, an activist living at a peace camp near Shannon Airport in Ireland.

The Irish government is not breaking its own laws by allowing US military planes to land at Shannon airport, it has been claimed.
Tanaiste Mary Harney said there was no truth in the claims made on Saturday at an anti-war protest.
``There is no question of the government breaking the law and of course what`s happening globally is under UN mandate,`` Ms Harney said.
``America is a friendly country,`` she said. ``America is well aware of what our laws are and the government is well aware of the implications of enforcing the law and certainly if there was any change from the government`s perspective that would have to be a matter for the Oireachtas in the future.

Wait a minute...

"``America is well aware of what our laws are and the government is well aware of the implications of enforcing the law.."

So the folks in Washington know our laws. Okay.
Sounds fine...

"The Government is well aware of the implications of enforcing the law"?

What the hell does that mean?
Does it mean what I think it means?

Any chance of a clarification Tanaiste?

The Western markets are presently "bullish".
The richest economy (USA) is experiencing difficulty due to the unplanned for effects of a general strike in Venezuela which have given advantage to OPEC states.
Leading economists are currently pitching the drop in corporated unit trusts as indications of the beginning of long term slump in investor confidence building on the collapse of Enron, worldcom and alledged irregularites in other sectors.
The dollar is sluggishly responding to recent highs in European markets as investors hedge their bets on Bush´s administrations handling of energy policy.
The British forces assembling on the border of Iraq were mostly due to go anyway to take part in training exercises off the coast of Malaysia.
The build-up of American forces is not effecting aerospace shares the traditional root to death investment.
Faustian Pax
the world´s leading advisor on business financial intelligece has seen no support in futures exchanges for the build-up.
Liffe it seems finally has a price?
