Shannon protesters wrong on Neutrality issue – Peter Power, TD
Protesters descending on Shannon again tomorrow will make further claims about our traditional stance of neutrality which are not true, according to Peter Power, TD.
“It remains clear that despite the claims of the protesters the central element of our neutral stance, the non membership of a military alliance, is intact. We are committed to promoting peace throughout the world and have used our influence in the US, at the UN and at the EU to push for a peaceful solution in the Gulf.”
“It has also been made clear on numerous occasions by the Minister for Foreign Affairs that in the event of military action that the continued use of Shannon by US military personnel and flights would be debated by the Dail.”
“The debate which has taken place in recent weeks has been healthy and I accept that both sides are genuine in their beliefs. But those who are protesting at Shannon should remember that this Government remains committed to trying to bring about a peaceful solution and is continuing its efforts.”
Deputy Power added that when making their alarmist claims the protesters should remember the close links this country has with the US, and the assistance America has provided with our own Peace Process and through investment.
