Belfast Anti War

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Thursday January 09, 2003 14:05author by Davy Carlin - West Belfast SWPauthor email carlindavid at hotmail dot com Report this post to the editors

Belfast building for anti war protests and actions.

Just to let people know that Belfast Anti war steering Group meets tonight 7.30pm BIFHE in Bunswick street. As well as this steering group newly established local groups have been set up.

Belfast central
Belfast West
Belfast south
Belfast colleges
Queens university

Belfast East and Belfast North are in the process of being established along with Jordanstown with areas around greater Belfast to be looked at. Local activities and the building for the Feb demo are among the priorities. I hope people and groups can get actively involved together to ensure that the largest anti war march of this kind seen in decades mobilises on the streets of Belfast.

I would like to send our solidarity from Belfast to those activists in Shannon and to let them know that many in our local communities, trade unions and workplaces will be watching their peace actions and raising the governments responses to peace activists both within our work and throughout the media in the North.

Finally other groups have and will be set up around the North such as that of the Derry anti war coalition presently active - again I would urge all to actively get involved.

Your presence would be better appreciated. Last protest, a bus was organised by a different group and it was overfilled (20+). Seeing as you are setting up 5 different local groups, surely there's enough there to fill a big bus or two. I understand that it's a long journey but so it is for a lot of people who're coming from Sligo, Dublin and further afield.
Is this Shannon protest on the 18th January not being called by the Irish Anti War Movement? Are you part of the IAWM?

Will you be organising a bus for Belfast etc

No - that would be daft and depend on the political & practical circumstances. We have organised buses for previous demos in the South and got a good response. However after debate we decided that to organise a rally in Belfast on Feb 15th in line with the international anti-war movement, would be more practical.

What *practically* is the demo. in Belfast on the 15th of next month going to do against the war effort?

Help build mass opposition to Bush's war like every act of resistance. You really ought to make a greater effort to stop your sectarianism make you say silly things.
