Vote early, vote often

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Tuesday December 10, 2002 18:33author by Voice of London Report this post to the editors

Do your bit for the BBC...

Thought you might like to vote !!!!

The BBC are at it again - this time however they're
asking everyone to vote for their favourite song of
all time. So obviously we're going to try and
mess it up for them. Go to the website:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/us/features/topten/
and enter your details.
In the boxes for Favourite song and Artist add the
following:
Artist : Wolfe Tones
Song : A Nation Once Again
Why : 800 years of oppression

PS Tell your friends!!!

Why is indymedia being taken over by a bunch of left-republicans? This is an anti-capitalist website! Nationalism is a capitalist ideology! for heavens sake!

Please dont vote for this pathetic song. Vote for the "Internationale" or something that is actually against capitalism!!

You are an idiot - the point is that this song is bubbling under the top 10 and it will piss off the BBC and the British establishment in general if it is voted up the list. These appeals are flying all round the world among Irish people, I have got five already today. It is a piss take and also to annoy them.
Of course if you want to split the vote by proposing some other song that does not have tens of thousands of votes already, then go ahead.
But I'm sure some little Tristram in the BBC will realise that your obscure objection is about - lighten up for God sake, it's not selling your soul, it's just an on-line poll.

It's a very slipperly slope in all fairness Mags. You start off voting for a Wolfe Tones song for a bit of a laugh or whatever, then you find yourself singing Fields of Athenry while drunk, and after that it's a short step to supporting Celtic and getting Eire tatooed on your ass and then they'll kick you out of the Ultra Revolutionary Leninist Trotskyite Solidarity Coalition of the 7th International. Oh, the humanity.

Secretarian hater: "Nationalism is a capitalist ideology!"

No it is not! Nationalism means that you have self dignity, you know where you are coming from and where you are going next. Nationalism is good, because without pride of your origin, you cannot respect people from other culture. You can be also communist and at the same time nationalist, you need to free your mind!! Be proud of who you are, black people from africa are also proud of being black. They say 'black power' because they feel good about themselves. You can respect your own culture also. You are also free to feel good about yourself, you don't have to feel shame because you was born white. Be a nationalist, be communist, be whatever you want!

It's not the only email going around - there are plenty of other campaigns that are not entirely motivated by considerations of musical taste...

Google a few of the titles

For the record here's the list as presented on the BBC website:

Vande Mataran (various)
Rakkamma Kaiya Thattu (Iiayaraja?)
Dil Dil Pakistan (Vital Signs)
Believe (Cher)
We Don’t Talk Anymore (Cliff Richard)
Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen)
Hero (Mariah Carey)
Imagine (John Lennon)
Poovum Nadakkuthu Pinchum Nadakkuthu (Thirumalai Chandran)

Now obviously it's not about taste either to be voting for "We Don't Talk Anymore" by ... him ... so I wonder what kind of politics motivates a campaign to get that ... thing ... declared as the greatest song ever.

Whoever they are, I oppose them.

nationalism is a capitalist ideology. Nations are a capitalist entity. Nations only came into existence in the capitalist era. They are very much creations of capitalism. Therefore nationalism is an ideology of capitalism.

I dont give a fuck about annoying the british establishment for irish republican-nationalist-catholicism reasons. I think that the UK establishment would be far more pissed off if the Internationale was in the top 10.

author by Alanpublication date Wed Dec 11, 2002 10:56author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Nationalism and republican are two totally different things (read Wolfe Tone if you don't believe me) and socialism is another thing altogether. Just shows the Provos want to be all things to all men (sic) while at the same time the nationalist leopard never changes his spots.

I'm voting for The Internationale.

author by Hebepublication date Wed Dec 11, 2002 11:54author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Alan needs to wise up, Republican Socialism has nothing to do with nationalism. In his contributions to debates on Indymedia, Alan has displayed an appalling ignorance of Irelands history and its current situation. Would you not prefer some sticky ditty? Perhaps a song like "Money, Money, Money!"? Or a song celebrating the OIRA hatchet attack on CP members?
Larry Whites Lament?

Sectarian Hater appears to be the sdame person as IRSP Hater. He believes that people whose politics he doesnt like should be tortured to death by the state. "Horst Wessel Lied" would be a more appropriate song for him.

So you would vote for it just to piss people off? Some of us are trying to work for peace in Ireland, if/when the british leave the north a million pissed off unionists will destroy Ireland for a generation, learn your Irish history and you will see that conflict destroys both sides!

author by Magspublication date Thu Dec 12, 2002 14:00author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Robby - you know nothing whatsoever about me, so fuck off - don't tell me to 'learn my history'. If you care to know I have a fucking MA in History, you moron. And are you really the kind of idiot who believes that voting in a BBC on-line poll is going to bring the guns out? Get a life. And we are all 'working for peace' - just not sanctimonious middle class crap like your equation of 'peace' with 'lack of conflict', which is not the same thing at all.

I know you Mags, and I know your sort. You are a sectarian that just wants to stir it up by getting some crappy Wolfe Tones song on the Top 10 list.

Why do you want to do this? If Loyalists were voting for the Sash to go on the Top 10 you would be the first to critise them, why should people not criticise you? Is it because Catholic sectarianism is OK?

author by Magspublication date Thu Dec 12, 2002 18:28author address author phone Report this post to the editors

It is not a 'Wolfe Tones' song, it was written by Thomas Davis in the 1840s.
If you go to a library and borrow a book on Irish history (an adult with provide assistance if this is too difficult) you will discover that Thamas Davis was - shock horror, a Protestant. As was Wolfe Tone.
PS When do I get my own 'hater'?, can I have one for Xmas, please.

Thank you Pat C, so thoughtful.
I shall preserve him carefully and if I can track down a female version may even try breeding. I suppose surplus West Brits can be disposed of via the 'swaps' section in 'Buy and Sell'. 'Twould be cruel to drown the little mites, y'see.

now mags, you should remember the IRB Supreme Council agreed that we would no longer refer to these types as "West Brits".

Anyway, I also bought you Penelope Fifi Forsythe-Smythe from TCD. You can now breed them.
