The following letter was received by Indymedia - I'd also like to acknowledge the solidarity shown by the Communist Party during the israeli Embassy protest.
3 April 2002
Brian Cowen TD
Minister for Foreign Affairs
Iveagh House
80 St Stephen's Green
Dublin 2
A chara:
The Communist Party of Ireland, along with many tens of thousands of
citizens of this state, watch appalled at the ongoing violence taking place
in the occupied territories in Palestine. We note your active and positive
support for the UN resolution calling for Israel to withdraw from these
territories. To date the Prime Minister of Israel, Ariel Sharon, has ignored
world public opinion and international diplomatic criticism.
We believe, and we feel that this view is shared by the overwhelming
majority of the Irish people, that you should recall our ambassador to
Israel, Patrick Hennessy, immediately.
In addition, we would further urge you to contact our EU partners to do
likewise and withdraw their ambassadors as a show of opposition to the
current policy now being carried out by the Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel
Sharon.
It is clear that the Israeli government is ignoring world public
opinion and the United Nations. Our Government and our EU partners are
duty-bound to speak up. By withdrawing their ambassadors we would be sending
a clear signal to both the Israeli Government and the Israeli public that
what is happening is unacceptable and must stop now.
The situation is beyond public condemnation: we must take the next
step. The events now unfolding within the Middle East will have consequences
across the globe.
Is mise,
Eugene McCartan
General Secretary
