CFE take 17 seats on UCD SU council

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Friday October 18, 2002 14:06author by Finghin - SY & CFE Report this post to the editors

Results of UCD SU council elections - more detailed results to come

The results of the student council election count has been taking place this morning. All the results are not officially confirmed as yet. But the
constituencies in which CFE candidates were standing are all in.

The Campaign for free education platform, stood on the programme of a fighting democratic studets union, against registration fees, for truely free education for all with a living grant and abolition of all fees. CFE won 17 seats in total, which means it is now the largest group on council. And effectivly has a functioning majority with the support of some independents. CFE candidates reciened massive votes in many areas. Some of those elected were elected with overall majorities.

This is a major blow to the careerists of the establishment parties in UCD and is a further step towards a fighting democratic students union.

Who are you Millie Tant? why do you have a problem with the CFE candidates? You call yourself 'Millie Tant' but you're not a member of SP or SY.

The CFE have plenty of female activists. Of those elected there are women, not a majority or even 50% unfortunatly. Why should a genuine campaign be blamed for the inequity in society when it comes to female activity in politics?

I'm pretty sure whoever is posting as 'Millie Tant' is just winding people up. The comic Viz has a character called Millie Tant who essentially is a characture of seperatist feminism. It's pretty unlikely any feminist would therefore post under the same label.

Excellent news, all the hard work has led to this!
well then to all involved.

the hard work is not finished Henry!

It's only begining. We still have to get the CFE to act as a co-ordinated group on the council and we have to ensure that we're ready for anything that those careerist fucks in FF are to throw at us.

now FF may be throwing a lot at you, but don´t worry they´ll only be teasing you.

I agree that the CFE should not just be restricted to UCD. Obviously we should make links with studetns in other colleges so we can mount an effective campaign that will really challenge this government.

This may be of some interest to those in UCD. They are not the official results.
1st Arts Group E - 46.88% 1
1st Arts Group B - 61.9% 1
2nd Arts Group B - 33.33% 1

2nd Arts Group E - 56.36% 1
3rd Arts Group A - 16.67% 1
3rd Arts Group B - 75.86% 2
2nd Science - 13.33% 0

Does any of the "socialist" contributors know exactly how many working class people are studying in UCD? not too many I suspect. The "socialists" are campaigning on behalf on a bunch of middle class types who have no comprehension of the reality on the ground in working class areas of our country. The reality is that the Nice mk 11 may very well pass, the presence of the "socialists" in these areas is nil. The thought may eventually occur to them that they are unlikely to find the proles in UCD, TCD, UCG, or UL.!!!!!

RED FRONT (not in Belfield)

author by OK - SPpublication date Sun Oct 20, 2002 01:49author address author phone Report this post to the editors

I think that it is Des that is not in reality.

You say that the working class are very few in colleges. In fact the working class (in the marxist understanding of the term) are a majority. Consciousness is another matter.

The fees attack students and poor families anmd is a direct assault by this government on the working class.

The fees introduced will not go to end inequality in Irish education, it will be used to fill a government deficit. The government will not improve the grants, they will not increase money in education at any level (primary, secondary or third level), the fee increase is regressive assualt on working families.

Remember if a student has two parents on the minimum wage he/she is not entitled to the grant.

Your point about Socialists campaigning against the fees "have no comprehension of the reality on the ground in working class areas". This shows your own ignorance of what the working clas is and the work of Socialists. Remember that the working class does not just refer to people that wear cloth caps. If you were active in Belfield you would know that Socialist Youth members are active in the communities around Dublin issues as well as in UCD.

its not hard to figure out, sp members in universities will organise in universities, in factories in factories in communities, in communities. By the way its the first time I've heard anyone excuse us of concentrateing too much on students. We were for a long time the weakest hard let party in the colleges.
