THE SOCIALIST ALTERNATIVE TO THE RIGHT WING POLITICIANS

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Tuesday April 02, 2002 13:03author by The Red Flag - Socialist Youth Report this post to the editors

Public meeting Cork Where: Spailpin Fanac When: Saturday April 6th At: 2.30pm

SOCIALIST YOUTH has invited Socialist Party candidate, Mick Barry, to tell us why the Socialist Party is standing in the general election and to ask SOCIALIST YOUTH for help in the contesting the election campaign.

As Mick is the only socialist candidate standing, it is important that the Socialist Party is supported. We will be putting forward an alternative to the right wing, pro-capitalist anti-asylum seeker candidates. It is important that we argue for this alternative and try to bring our ideas and politics to as wide a layer of people as possible. It is important, I would argue, that SY members, who have been playing a serious and active role in building that alternative through our work since Sept 2000, to play a role and show young that there is an alternative.

I'll like to take this opportunity to congratulate Mike for standing in Cork North Central and will also calling for a first preference vote for Mike Barry in the city.

Secondly, I’ll want to notify people that the Socialist Workers Party in Cork will also be standing a candidate for the first time in Cork South Central, Michael O'Sullivan, a local authority worker and IMPACT union activist.

If anyone out there wants to help us in any way on the south side of Cork, contact us at the email address above.

thanks

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know aren't the Worker's Party running a candidate in one of the Cork City Constituencies - Cork North Central or Cork South Central as well?

Yes there is a Workers Party candidate in Cork North Central from my information. My position is cooperation where possible between left parties, including tatical voting if that can be arranged.
