NUIG Students Oppose Bush's War on Iraq![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Students from NUI Galway call for 'No Attack On Iraq'! As imperialist warmongers and oil magnates across the globe prepare to go to war against Iraq, a number of students and societies from NUI Galway have come together to oppose the current strong arm tactics of the US government. Since the implementation of sanctions against Iraq in 1990, the child-mortality rate in this country has doubled. The World Health Organization estimates that 5,000 Iraqi children die each month due to malnutrition and lack of medical care. As for the economic fallout: In 1989 the Iraqi dinar was worth $1.25. Today it’s 2,500 dinars to $1. The Bush administration espies yet another opportunity, presented by it’s "war on terror", to continue to pursue it’s policy of world hegemony. The Taliban were targeted a year ago, primarily because they were a torn in the side of US plans for oil company, Unocal, to run a pipeline through Afghanistan. Now as Chevron Texaco, ExxonMobil and BP require access to Iraq, Saddam Hussein is next on the hit list. If the charge against the Iraqi regime is that it harbours ambitions to go nuclear, then this is a hypocritical charge. Several other countries, including the US, have long possessed nuclear weapons. The US possesses more nuclear weapons than all other nuclear powers put together; its military budget, standing presently at $400 billion, accounts for 45 per cent of global military spending. If we confine ourselves to the Middle East alone, Israel is in possession of nuclear weapons in excess of 200. The US is seeking to grab control of the Middle East's oil resources under the pretext of a pre-emptive strike to remove the fear of an alleged nuclear threat from Iraq. Over the coming weeks, we intend to hold a number of events and activities to raise awareness about the real issues behind the rhetoric and we would appeal to all those interested to get in contact with us.
