Anti racist demo tommorow![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Following the murder of 50-year-old Leong Ly Min in Dublin Globalise Resistance and a group of Chinese students have called for a demonstration to stop racist attacks on Saturday 24th August, 3pm at the GPO. The government’s policies on refugees and asylum seekers are completely contradictory. The launching of the “No to racism” campaign, while a welcome initiative, lost a good deal of impact due to the simultaneous imprisonment of asylum seekers in Mountjoy, and the callous deportations of desperate people who failed to meet strict criteria for refugee status. The continuing failure of the government to deal with the housing and health problems of Irish citizens, and the fact that the “Celtic Tiger” has done nothing whatsoever to alleviate the widespread poverty in the country, has greatly contributed to a general anti-refugee feeling amongst some Irish people who are not willing to place the blame where it belongs. This feeling is not prevalent in the majority however, and it is very important that people come out and condemn such acts of cowardly violence and make it clear that racism will not be tolerated.
