Martin Óg Meehan, PRO for Republican Network for Unity has announced that the Network intends to oppose plans to commemorate the British Queens Jubilee by lighting a beacon on the Summit of Cavehill Mountain on June 4th.

Meehan stated “Anybody with even a basic knowledge of Irish history will be aware that the summit of Cavehill Mountain is where the founding fathers of Irish Republicanism, Henry Joy McCraken, Theobold Wolfe Tone and Thomas Russell met in 1795 and dedicated themselves to ridding Ireland of all traces of Monarchy, inequality, and privilege”.

“Cavehill mountain is a sacred spot for Irish republicans and indeed revolutionaries the world over, the placing of this Beacon in honour of an unelected foreign monarch can only be viewed as a calculated snub to the ideals for which so many Irish Republicans both Protestant and Catholic alike gave their lives in 1798 and since.

RNU will not allow this event to go ahead unopposed, we intend to organise in opposition and ask other concerned groupings and individuals to assist in defending the integrity of the Cavehill summit”.
